Stooked field in Monarch district, Alberta.
This picture is taken near Monarch, Alberta which is a very small village east of Fort Macleod. This picture shows a very large field of wheat and must have been taken prior to the 1930s because the unbroken field of grain is much greater than it has been in latter years. During the 1930s there was so little moisture and so much wind that the drifting was terrible. As a result the farmers had to do what is known as strip farming. The fields, particularly in the Monarch area, were seeded in strips only a few yards wide. In alternate years the strips were cropped and summer fallowed. The stubble was left long as a trash on the field. As the land was cultivated, the covering an narrow strip did a great deal to reduce the loss of top soil due to winds.
