Team of 32 horses and mules and eight wagons owned by Mr. Glen House of Arrowwood, Alberta, hauling grain.
The wheat farmers of Southern Alberta hauled his grain to railroad elevators with horse teams. Many big farms were miles from the railhead, and therefore the farmer brought as much as he possibly could in one load because it was often impossible to make a round trip in one day. This meant putting the horses in a livery barn and the driver staying in a hotel overnight. As a consequence the loads became heavier and heavier by increasing the number of wagons and teams. A wagon box held about sixty bushels of wheat and could be hauled by one team of two horses. A grain tank held nearly double that amount and required a four horse team to haul it. This type of box replaced the ordinary box on the big grain farms. Therefore, eight wagons loaded with wheat in grain tanks required thirty-two horses to haul the load. It was not unusual to see six or eight big outfits drawing into a railroad town in the late afternoon. Owners then started to compete with bigger loads and bigger teams though a team of more than sixteen was not practical because it was very difficult to hitch and required two attendants. Mr. Glen House of Arrowwood, Alberta was raised in the western United States of America, before coming to Canada and had used mule teams a great deal. He brought many fine mules into the southern Alberta area
