These pictures were taken in the vicinity of the P. Burns and Company packing plant and the Calgary Stockyards before 1920. The Burns plant has not changed a great deal since then, only expanded. A feed lot in connection with the plant shows a number of cattle in pens. In the nearest pen, it would appear that some of the cattle are being fed from mangers. For many years the company specially fed some cattle for customers who demanded the finest quality beef. The Palliser Hotel was one of these customers and one could enter a lot where steers were being fed grain until they were in superb condition. The larger pens appear to be in part of the Calgary Stockyards which adjoins the Burns plant and feed lot. This has been a very busy spot for over half a century and particularly so during the past fifteen years. The livestock exchange is situated to the right and out of the picture. Through it is an in conspicuos two-storyed building, many millions of dollars worth of business have been transacted here during each year. This old building is forty to fifty years old in this picture and must be soon replaced by a more pretentious building. Besides the buyers livestock, it houses the Government brand and health inspection offices and also the office of the manager. These yards and buildings are the property of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
