Conglomerate samples
These siliciclastic rocks are conglomerates varying in textural maturity, sorting, and roundness. Conglomerates are composed of a framework of coarse clasts (>2 mm) enclosed in a fine-grained matrix of sand, silt, and/or mud particles. Sample A is an intraformational conglomerate due to the coarser clasts and finer matrix being of the same provenance, as well as the deformational fractures within the clast. Image A' is the cross-sectional view of sample A. This sample is also the most mature because it is well-sorted and well-rounded in addition to being matrix supported. Samples B and C are both extraformational because of the variation in colour between the clasts and the matrix. This indicates a difference in composition and provenance. Both samples display very poor sorting. Sample B is paraconglomerate (matrix-supported) with sub-rounded to well-rounded grains while Sample C is an orthoconglomerate (grain-supported) with subangular grains and is the most texturally immature. Sample D is similar to Sample A in having coarser, well-rounded clasts, but is grain-supported. The poor sorting of pebble-sized clasts, smaller fragments, and the fine-grained matrix in between clasts, as well as having poor sphericity, consisting of elongated clasts with no preferred orientation make this sample texturally immature.
