ALLEN Endeavoring to meet the ever increasing demand of the patriotic people of Canada for the display of British films on the Canadian screens, BRITISH FILMS LIMITED is being organized to import, distribute and exploit the leading photo plays of Britain and stories woven around British and Canadian life THE manufacture of motion picture films within th British Empire has now been brought to a high state of perfection, as many British films already distributed by us and to be released in the near future attest. Before the war a large percentage of the films shown in Great Britain were imported from other countries. But the output of films made in Britain has. steadily increased, and there is an abundant supply to meet the reasonable demafid of our people that British films should be given a fair measure of re- presentation upon the screen. S A great majority of our patrons in Canada are of British birth or descent. They are naturally desirous of seeing reproduced upon our screens some pictures of British life. Asa British people we are proud of our history, our traditions, and our achievements. We desire to see the picture play masterpieces that are produced in the mother coun- try and to be brought face-to face with the rulers, the statesmen, the soldiers and the sailors of the motherland. There have been many requests for a more adequate representation of British films. These requests have been brought to our attention in many ways, and we feel that they should be granted. For the past ten years we have maintained an office in London, and have secured many British films which have scored a tremendous success in Can- ada. Some of these will be hereaftet enumerated, together with a list of other films of British origin now in course of production and soon to be released. This subject has been up for discussion many times in the periodicals and the press of the country, and without exception these organs of public opinion have voiced the. demand for a more adequate representation of British films in Canada. They have felt it would be in the interests of our national Empire. Our position is that the Canadian ptiblic would like to.-have a fair and adequate measure of representation accorded the British films. ind for that purpose we have organized the British Films Limited, and will therefore be in a much better position than ever before to meet the wishes of our pat- rons and of the people of Canada in this particular regard. Our patrons and the public generally will recall with pleasure a number of our suc- cesses as soon as they are mentioned. They include DAVID COPPERFIELD, IVANHOE, THE BATTLE OF WATE RLOO, BRITAIN PREPARED, BAT- TLE OF THE SOMME, CANADIAN ARMIES IN ACTION, THE ADVANCE OF THE TANKS, HEARTS OF THE WORLD, another British success now being exhi- bited in Canada, was created by D. W. GRIFFITH at the request of and in co-operation with the British Government; The GREAT LOVE, another masterpiece of D. W. GRIFFITH; SPORTING LIFE, the famous British racing melodrama, WHICH OPENS AT THE ALLEN THEATRE, EDMONTON, FOR 4 DAYS, COMMENCING MONDAY,, FEBRUARY 24TH; ANDTHAT DYNAMIC SUCCESS, THE BET TER OLE, WHICH HAS CREATED A SENSATION IN EDMONTON AT THE ALLEN THEATRE DURING THE LAST WEEK, brings the list up to a creditable showing. . ae new national patriotic policy, of which this, the announcement, will soon bear fruit in the importation of many of the most recent and successful British filmsWith- in the near future there will be released in Canada that most touching story of the war, already famous in Britain, under the title of The Kiddies in the Ruins. Those who have seen the play, The Better Ole, in London, will remember the question of Alf, What is this blinkin war about? The answer is given in the play, The Kiddies in the Ruins, which depicts an humble home in France before and after the battle of, the Somme. Those who have seen this wonderful production, it is said, are never able to efface from their minds its deep impression of pathos and humor. Lady Beaverbrook, addressing an/(audierice of fifteen hundred women at Ashton, told of the impression made upon Lloyd-George by the Kiddies in the Ruins. She said, He sat with one of my babies on his knee and his arm around the other two. You should have seen his face change from loving sympathy to bitter hatred at-the evil committed by the Boche on the children of France. Another production soon to be witnessed by our patrons throughout Canada is en- titled God Bless Our Red, White and Blue. This is a story to make the heart swell with pride for the England that is and the England that has been. The Red is the coat of the Chelsea pensioner; the White is the spotless apron of the army nurse; the Blue is the pathetic and ever to be honored coat of Tommy wounded. s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor. This one of the best productions that were ever made in England. One of the reasons for its tremendous success is the subject of the story. It tells of a girl who was asked to marry a man she does not love, and her predic- ament. The film has three different stories showing (1) How it would have been if she had married the man her parents desired; (2) How it would have been had she married the man of her choice; (3) How it was. The story is somewhat similar to the play, The Eyes of Youth, which had a tremendous success im New York and Toronto. These make up a number of the stirring, splendid picture plays of British origin that we will soon show in Canada. There will also be imported from Britain many films dealing with the history of the past, and the history that is now in the making. At no time has Britain, the mistress of the seas, occupied such a commanding place in the af- fairs of the world. Her rulers, statesmen, soldiers, and sailors will be seen face to face by the people of Canada. Alll these films will breathe the spirit of British liberty ayd Bri- tish nationality. They will focus the minds and hearts of the spectators upon British achievements and British institutions. They will be encircled and inspired by an at- mosphere of imperial patriotism. i From the above announcement it will be easily seen to what a very considerable extent the proportion of British films will be increased in the houses under our manage ment and the management. of affiliated com panies. ce TO MAKE WAY FOR THIS LARGE NUMBER OF BRITISH FILMS, THE COMPANIES AFFILIATED AND CONTROLLED BY US WILL CURTAIL THEIR IMPOR- TATION OF AMERICAN FILMS, EFFECTIVE IMMED- IATELY, FROM TWENTY TO THIRTY PER CENT. The organization of the British Films L imited should be hailed with delight as our New Year s message and our New Year's gif t to the people of Canada. JULE JAY J. ALLEN.
