Bryozoan Trace Fossil
Bryozoans are filter-feeding aquatic organisms that live in colonies. They secrete skeletons that are either branched or fan-shaped. The bryozoans in this image are branched and exhibit “cellular structure†and each cell is ≤1 mm in diameter. These organisms have a distinct lace-like texture that makes them easily identifiable. Bryozoans have recently diversified and were important sediment producers during the Paleozoic era. This image was taken on the Parker Ridge Trail.
