Galena sample
Galena is a sulphide mineral that can be identified by its bright metallic lustre, dense specific gravity and perfect cleavage of 3 directions at 90°. Other notable properties of Galena are that it is non-magnetic and is a very soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of < 2.5, this mineral also produces a grey/black streak. The main element found in Galena is lead and occasionally silver. Galena is one of the primary ores of lead and is also a source of silver. Galena can be found in igneous and metamorphic rocks and occurs in sulphide deposits like hydrothermal vents. A common use of Galena is in lead-acid car batteries.
