Graded bedding
Graded bedding, which can also be referred to as either normal or reverse grading depending on upright orientation, is characterized by the gradational fining of sediment, which can be observed above in successive parallel strata. This results from the cyclical differential settling of poorly sorted sediment load from suspension or waning flow velocity in a river or stream setting. Greater velocity has the energy to transport and deposit coarser sediments but as flow velocity slows down, transport energy weakens and deposits finer and finer sediment. Normal grading is used in the case of upward fining from a coarse-grained base, which is typical of depositonal environments with decreasing current energy over time, whereas reverse grading is the deposition of a strata of finer sediments followed by that of coarser-grained sediments, which is highly uncommon in nature. For this reason, the direction of fining sediment is typically an indicator for upright orientation.
