Saskatchewan Glacier
Saskatchewan Glacier is located in Banff National Park, Canada. It is the largest outflow from the Columbia Icefield, being the primary water source of the North Saskatchewan River. Between 1983 and 2012 there was a 700-metre loss in length at the toe of the glacier. In 2013 the glacier was recorded to have a total length of 12 kilometers. It is expected that the rate of recession will continue at 25-30 meters per year. The Saskatchewan Glacier is classified as a valley glacier of the alpine type, meaning that it is confined by mountain terrain. Image A overlooks the glacier and the water bodies that have been created at the terminus due to retreat. Both images A and B depict the distinct U-shaped glacial valley. Image A-1 highlights the trimline which represents the level at which the glacier previously came into direct contact with the adjacent valley.
