The hardest winter recalled by Tom Usher was 1906-1907; hay and pasture were scarce on the Usher ranch owing to major prairie fires in the summer of 1906; the advent of tractors and snow ploughs somewhat eased the problem; this photograph shows the road just north of Scollard on the way to Big Valley.
