Hailstorm damage to vegetable garden near Usher home, Usher ranch, Scollard, Alberta.
Hail hit hard on the ranch at various times; this view shows the vegetable and flower garden decimated by hail; note the corn stalks stripped clean; hailstorms were frequent and savage visitors in the summer; storms were often guided towards the ranch because of the prevailing wind currents blowing up the coulee from the west; such storms would put an immediate stop to haying as both workers and animals sought hasty cover, and crops were pelted flat; as always it was a guess who in the region would get hail while their neighbours would escape damage.
