Appleby ts preparing for the presentation of a children's musical operetta, The Flower Queen, to be given in a fow weeks* time in the Bailey theatre. it will be held under the auspices of the Sunday school. Practices for the Operetta have started: ; Mr. Ed, A, Corbett of the Uni- voraity of Alberta Extension De- partment, wan the speaker at the roxular weekly luncheon of the -Hetary cib on Monday. His aub- Ject wan, Phe history of the Indi- ans of Wentern Canada. * He men- tioned the mumeroun tribes which inhabited the country from the lower MacKansle river to Moxico, and in an Interesting manner do sorlbed many of thelr habits, thelr ways of hunting, and thelr social life. Tho greatest and most powar- ful tribe was the Blackfect, whose territory extended from the Battle River south into Montana and tn- coded most of the plains country lying west of the present boundary of Alberta and Snakatchowan. These people were fortunate in sscuring horses which in the fifteenth cent- ury were brought into Mextoo by Spaniards, and they became expert horsemen. The acquiattion of horses was undoubtedly responsible for their growth in numbers, as they were able to keep in. close touch with the many parts of thelr territory, thun giving protection to e different units. Although much apeculation haa taken place as to the origin of our Indians, nothing is definitely known of thelr early history, nor of thelr entry upon this continent. It is, however, be- Heved that they are of Mongolian igin and that they crossed over to this continent, many hundreds, and perhapa thousands of yeara ago by way of the Behring soa. Mr. Corbett ia alwaya a favorite. visitor to the Camrose Rotary Club, and t was apparent from him talk that he has given the mubject very thor- ough study, Four. ong was upon 1 out mn oyah-h-h-n, announcer. Take your time, everaybodie ee No rushing, no crowding All out an ovah-h-b. Judy waited only until she had neon the surprised audience berin to move toward the entrance; then, with an excited half-running gait, the hurried for the flags and Tim Mulia: he announced in answer to her unasked question. It came down all at once. And them trees ain't helping a-aeeH: the roar ink, a8 of a waterfall, had pulled her attention Immediately to the bridge, where now the waters were almost level, and the first of the matinee crowd was feeling tts w: started over the atructure against which uprooted trees had eaught in the beginning of 2 dam of debris, Thom trees said Tim Mullane agaln. I seon em coming and sent men out there to try to fend em off, Wean't any use; current too strong. Judy turned for a crisp command. Tear down. AN tore down, ma'am. Menagerie tent, cookhouse, everything but the big. top. Starting on thet now. 5 The clattering of seats b ing hastily piled joined with the roar- ing of the waters, shortly to. be mingled with atil another sound the trumpeting of an elephant Judy moved swiftly to the edge of the tent, and u trembling hand. went to her lps. Tim Mullane had sald no- thing of this; there was nothing to way. The position of Old Bill told his own story. In the low space whore the menogerie tent had heen and where water was slowly begin- ning to rise, stood a2 giant being. alone, save the ring of utakes which held him prisoner. Tim Mul- Jano had taken advantage of mis- fortune. The menagerie had stood at a spot fully twelve fect lower than. the bride. Onoo the back- waters began to pour into the lower itretches of the circus grounds there would be no need for cyanide To Be Continued Next Week Mr, E. A. Corbett wax a guest with Mr. and Mrs F. 1.
