A Fine Community Spirit “You have a very nico town!” Such « about the town in which you reside must comment be a source of satisfaction, part- icularly to those whose efforts have been instrumental in car- rying out improvements that prompted the remark. Local organizations are active in their efforts to improve and beautify Sylvan Lake, and as time rolls by much is being ac- complished. Individual effort is increasing and the number of “community conscious” workers mounts. Pride in your community starts with your own home and grounds, If each householder would take a personal interest in keeping buildings neat and painted, and the grounds and boulevards trimmed the results in one season would probably astonish even the most optimistic worker. All this is just the start of a Fine Community Spirit. But itis a good start. Where you find residents engaged in im- proving their places, you will well xenerally find they are also active in other community undertakings. The Chamber of Commerce— the Service Club—your church Ladies’ Aids—the Women's In- stitute—the 1.0.D.E.—the local branch of the Canadian Red Cross;—these organizations all exhibit a fine community apirit. You too can help to win for your town the comment, “You have a very nice town and show a fine community spirit.” You Will Re PLEASED PRINTING The SYLVAN LAKE NEWS ALBERTA VOTERS GO TO POLLS will be given an opportunity to elect three members at large. Regarding the innovation Pre mier Ernest C. Manning has made the folloy observa tion, THE SOLDIERS’ VOTE “Certain critica of the govern- ment have decried the fact that |the Alberta 1 Act does not make provision for a vote by soldiers from Alberta stationed outside the province It would present € or serving overseas, have been better if these politi- cians had held their premature criticiam until they knew the government's intentions, At the lust seasion the govern- ment advised that the question of the soldier's vote was being carefully investigat- ed. Our enquiries have made it quite clear that our active ser- | vice men and women are not in- ical par- terested in mere pol | ties, nor concerned with the pol- itieal fortunes of individual par- |ty candidates, many of whom are unknown to those absent in the forces. What they rightly interested in is that the men and women of the armed forces should have their own representatives in our legisla- are ture to put forward the view- points of the servicemen and women and to safeguard their rights and interests in all mat- ters which pertain to their wel- fare. The Social Credit government ie in full and complete accord with the viewpoint of the ser- vicemen and women in this matter and accordingly we are making arrangement for the members of the active armed forces from Alberta to elect three active servicemen or wo- | men as members at large in the Alberta legislature. It is our intention that their with the if the job is done at the office of etion | whole| THE SYLVAN LAKE NEWS vote shall be completed in time to enable those elected to attend the next regular session of the house. We have already intim ated that a special session may 4 be necessary this fall to spe the implementation of the gov ernment’s province-wide home building program. If legislation is found to be neces apecial sary to make possible the elec tion of representatives from the armed forces, it also-will be in troduced at the special session.’ Erneat C.
