Of all the fads that were the outgrowth of the war the so-called lt;faylight saving scheme had least excuse. Who originated the brilliant idea that daylight, or anything else, oould be saved by the: simple expedient of putting the - r.. waa a clock forward an hour, is not thing with definitely known. Hut whoever he was. amongst all the imbeciles of all history, he was in a class by himself. To save, or increase the value, of daylight by changing the time of the clock was as sensible and no more so than the expedient of the historic navigator who stilled the storm by turning the barometer upside down. As Jong aa the fad was local, it was Utterly inconvenient, and so had partisans who thought that because it j was .inconvenient it must have, merit. If town No. 1 put'it - foeka forward one hour, it was an hour ahead of town No. 2 whieh had not done so. But when all the clocks in all the oountry were put forward, and no one was ahead of another the utter absurdity of the idea became I Mnry apparent. Of course it was rather more apparent in the more northerly latitudes, where thc trouble in midsummer is to get enough darkness in which to sleep, not to get daylight in which to work. After all .there must, be rest or there can't be labor; and it is therefore just as important that there shall be hours for sleep at;a,bout that, t e *t nt t no every cot such part of the z-i hours as is heraei*. best suited for sleep, as that there shall be hours convenient for work. Naturally the people who worked the hardest and longest needed the most satisfactory period of rest. So daylight saving met its strongest opposition from the fanning community. Sugar is retailing in Kdmonton at less than 12 cents.
