Page 14 Claresholm Local Press, Thursd: ary 15, 1981 Driftwillow Diary. Good neighbours and fr1 Many of you readers know my. friends, Irene and Hilly Oneil. They are perfect exam- ples of good neighbours and friends in need. ; have volunteered their help on many occasions, such as the January -first kick-off party, when we called Hilly the head of the Teamsters Union, organizing the horse-drawn vehicles, and supplying his own wagon, pulled by Dick and Jane. Irene was busy in the kitchen, decked out in her Ellison Flour Mills apron. This winter they have signed ip to go with oil rigs as cook and cook's helper, but my luck held out, and they were between camp moves over the New Year,.and both turned up to help us finish off the birthday celebrations, While they were here I asked permission to pass along to you people the letter Irene sent out to her friends at Christmas called Granny at Camp. I found it hilarious, and even if you do not know them as-well-as I do, I feel sure * you will get a few chuckles out of it. My first move was a good one. I climbed into the party manager's truck for the trip. So far, the party aspect has evaded me. Anyway, after only a few brief periods of wonder- ing if we were on the right road, we arrived safetly at the pre-destined spot. Prior to this 1 had not known the value of water. It s emed- that the water truck driver had not been so successful in his brief periods of wondering if he was on the right road. Our main contact with the others of the human race was through the cat skinners who had prepared . our site: t-camp, someone had brought enough water to make an urn of coffee. Also someone had. brought bread, butter and cold cuts. Hilly and I washed our hands in a half cup of coffee, and made a sandwich. Then, with eager anticipation we went on to examine our kitchen. We found it to be filthy beyond description so I won't Yee to describe it. Our home was dirty too, but. we were given clean sheets and blankets, Fortunately, Jecause we each weigh well over 200 Ibs., we do not have bunk beds. However, for some unfathomable reason, our sin- gle beds are way up in the air. Honestly Our bedside table is a card table, and we reach down (well, a little bit, anyway.) Our feet dangle over . the edge like. those of a little kid on a stool. For two days I. nearly pulled my arms out of tiir sockets, hoisting myself into the trailer, as there were no steps. Finally we stole a plastic milk carton holder from NADP for a step. Our home is next to the washroom (same, trailer) and the breezes are perfumed with Pine Sol and they blow. However, we all know that it could be worse Pine Sol doesn t make me sneeze so that s okay, Next morning we went to the kitchen at 5 a.m. One of the burgers on the propane- fired range was on. Hilly turned the control to off and nothing happened. It appeared that we had a stove with a mind of its own our our hands.Y We soon learned that it had a mind not to work at all (excepting for the everlasting flame.) Furthermore, it en- couraged the hot water heater to do likewise. During the night someone from the cat camp had brought water for the. kitchen. When I was slaving at cleaning cupboards, the water ran cold. The camp h were d They suspected the propane tank control and went out to beat on it with wrenches and such. Hilly assured me that they were not acting out of malice or sadism. They be- lieved it to..have a crumb caught in its throat and were attempting to dislodge it Without my being aware of it, daylight arrived, and soon afterwards the water truck. I was so delighted at the prospect of a water supply,. I was tempted to kiss the driver Instead we tried to ply him with food but he: wasn't hungry. He had beensto a dozen other camps in the considerable area which he had covered in, his search for ours and hatMbeen well fed. He went for water, but he hadn't cleaned out the tank, so the water he delivered was of a dark rust fue. I was tempted to kill him, but was prevented from doing so by his departure The idiot who believed that a company would not hire a female if it did not have washroom facilities for her was quite wrong. The poor party manager who has an office- bedroom - bathroom trailer was supposed to allow me to use his bathroom. Pre- sumably to indicate his ele- vated position, or perhaps for the sake of hasty escapes, his trailer is up on wheels and has six metal steps leading up to the door, (which is what steps often do.) Before coming here, I bought the most beautiful pair of red coveralls with a quilted lining Hilly suggested that they would be perfect for going out to shower in. Disrobe at home, wear the cozy garment to and fro. Good idea. After hours of scrubbing at filth, I felt the need of a shower, so whispered to Luke (the man- ager) that I woul ld like to invade his privacy. 1 donned my uniform and with Hilly to show me the way around, made my way to the bathroom The water was cold, so I didn t shower. Just as well, because I'd have come out with my hide approximately the colour of my covies. Although that tritler door is of the same design as ours, itdidn t want to Open, so had to give it one heck of a thump. The door shot open, and I shot out like a cork by Jean Hoare out qt champagne je. My life didn t flash before my eyes but, happily, the hand rail did I managed to grab it with my left hand. My left leg banged against the metal steps and my right foot got caught between the trailerand the top step. Envision the sight of me in a pair of bright red coveralls doing the splits on a set of stairs suspended by my left arm and right foot. The considerable--weight of my body was forcing the step against the-wall. If it hadn't been for my famous Famo- lare sole, my foot would perhaps have been crushed Luke was directly across the yard and observed the perfor- mance. He must surely have been torn between the pro- blem of explaining a corpse on his office steps to his superiors and the prospect of seeing the last of me forever, In any case, he tore over to me and dislodged my foot. I made my way to my own home much bruised in both body and spirit. Hilly came and anoint- ed my single shallow cut with Ozonal, gave me sympathy and insisted that I lie down for a couple of hours. So I crawled into bed to lick my wounds and rest. The night before our room had been suffocatingly hot. Now it was cool and getting cooler. I checked the thermostat, The temperature gauge was ignoring the in- structions of the thermostat No heat. Back to the cozy kitchen. When I put my shoes on, I noticed that my ankles were enormous. They spent a few days delicately draped over the tops of my shoes. In spite of the stove, Hilly serve us a delicious prime rib dinner. That helped a lot. About 9:30 p.m, we decided to call it a day. As Hilly was walking past the stove he heard a hiss and then a flame shot out the front of the stove. He beat the flame and told me to go quickly for the mechanics at the power plant next door. I went as quickly as I could, pounded on the door, and roared: The propane has gone completely mad and the top of the stove is on fire. The speed with which they came out of their dor was second only to mine earlier in the day. With fire extinguishers in hand they burst into the kitchen to find Hilly still beating on his inappropriate flame hardly the conflagration. which I had described. But no one was mean to me and they even said it could have been a bad fire. The propane tank problem had to be solved. The non-mal- icious and non-sadistic pound- ing began again. My problem was that if the exterior wall of our trailer was removed, I could reach out from my bed and hug the propane tank. The repair job went on until 2:30 a.m. Anyhow, they fixed the thing. These adjustments and prepairs come under th head- ing of setting up camp . Then the-equipment began to arrive all on track vehicles (Nodwells). I began to realize that this outfit was serious about its-job. Also that mechanies were not put on this earth for the sole. purpose of fixing up the propane tank in the middle of the night beside my ear. Only one other strange thing has happened to me. One morning I was blind. I couldn't imagine why because J hadn't been drinking wood alcohol (or whatever). Eventually I came to realize.that I had reached too far across the table and picked up Hilly' s glasses instead of mine. I'm really warming to my job. It s a lot like having a bunch of nice guys in as dinner guests (breakfast and lunch ing Service * 147N - Development Notice TAKE NOTICE that an application for Develop- ment Permit by Tony.
