A Council discussed the-mat- ter of residents in the town parking on the boulevards in front of their residences. It was generally agreed that this was not a very desirable practice ahd that it should be consider- ed further. The bylaw enforce- ment officer has been advising persons not to do this, * however, as yet no fines have been given for this infraction. Council would hope, that the, residents would consider the matter after having been advised and that it would not be necessary to enforce the bylaw in this respect. Clareshoim Local Press, Thui wary 15, 1981 3 Irrigation improves problem soil Dr..C. J. Palmer, Soil Scientist The productivity of certain Splonetzic soils may be im- proved by proper irrigation practices. That conclusion is based on results from studies on the management of these problem soils at the Leth- bridge Research Station. Solonetzic soils can be recognized in the field by the patchy growth of vegetation and by the pitted soil surface. These soils are characterized by a high salt content, particu- larly of sodium salts, and a * hard, impervious claypan ten to 25 centimeters (four to ten inches) below the soil surface. This claypan prevents free movement of water into the soil. i In the past, irrigration of Solonetzic soils has not been recommended because of the danger of cafSing a high water table and thus increasing salinity. Studies have shown that some Solonetzic soils cannot be irrigated. The new information resulting from our recent research suggests that irrigation used carefully can improve certain Solonet- zic soils by reducing the salt levels. In 1975, a four-year irri- gation study was established on a Solonetzic soil near Enchant, Alberta. Water was applied by sprinkler in pre- cisely controlled amounts and at rates slow enough to avoid surface puddling and to pre- vent a buildup of the water table. Soil samples were taken for analysis at 120 locations before the experifment and again when the experiment was completed.
