Jack 'Smoky' Allen was born in Salem, Oregon, came to Alberta in 1882 as a cowboy on a cattle drive to the Cochrane ranch. He served in the Riel Rebellion as a scout and was later in the cattle business. In his later years he was a clerk at the Queen's Hotel, Fort Macleod, Alberta.
