Frank Ricks was born in Eureka County, California, and came to Alberta in 1883 as a cowboy bringing in a band of horses. He worked on the Mount Royal Ranch; became manager of L and S Ranch near Cochrane, and later owned and operated the Alberta Hotel in Banff. After leaving the hotel he took up a ranch near the L and S Ranch at Jumping Pound.
