Colonel James Fred Scott was born in Meaford, Ontario in 1893. He worked on a ranch near Alsask, Saskatchewan, before First World War, then served with the 50th Battalion overseas. He was with Alberta Light Horse from 1921 to 1939, when he mobilized the Calgary Highlanders. Later he served at Royal Military College and battle school at Vernon British Columbia. After First World WarI he resumed his law practice.
