James Butlin was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1887 and was the son of Joe Butlin, of the North West Mounted Police and his wife Angelique, nee Roselle. James served with the 50th Battalion overseas, during First World War and returned wounded to Calgary in 1917, thereafter working for the Calgary Transit system. Hilda King was the daughter of George C. King.
