Wayne Notley, Chairman, Olds Hospital Board residents hope war ends soon by Janice Harrington For the past week, Olds has watched while war rages in the Persian Gulf. Reports of bombings in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Israel flash across our televisions, radios and papers, and in the midst of it all, most residents are sharing the same feeling - let's get it over with quickly. Bill Elliott, a veteran to World War II and member of the Olds Legion watched through the night last Wednesday and into the day on Thursday while the American-led coalition began its bombardment of Saddam Hussein. It made me sweat to watch, he said. I. was in London during the blitz in World War II, and this gives me a funny feeling. I know this had to be done, and so far it looks like, and Talk about New Trends with your Old Friends at John Deere Day 1991 (fteanlif EQUIPMENT SALES LTD PO BOX 730 OLDS ALBERTA TDM IPO 403/5 fi1 Date Friday, February 8, 1991 Time 12:00 Noon Place Greenline Dealership Olds Calgary Hearing Aid Centre Hearing Aid Wearers Service For Your Hearing Aid Hearing Test at Evergreen Centre or Your Home Next Service Centre EVERGREENS' SENIOR CLUB OLDS Friday, February 8,1991 10 TO 12 NOON Calgary Hearing Aid Centre Calgary Office 604 - 1st SW PHONE: 263-0584 Alberta Motor Association Offers resident driver instruction in the Olds/Bowden area. Candace Spurrell, executive director of the Olds General Hospital shares the same hope. I would be really disappointed if it had to become a ground war. I think then we will see a high number of casualties. I just wish we could have been clever enough in 1990 to have been able to avoid this altogether. I don't believe for a second that this is to protect the people of Kuwait, it is an economic war. But despite the wishful thinking, many people feel the war will drag on longer than the Americans have predicted. Wanda Blatz, Royal Bank head teller feels the war is just beginning. I don't think people realize what Hussein is capable of. This pulls you because you want to see it work, but you don't want people to die either. Roberta Hammer agrees. The Olds Com munity Services director fears Saddam is only biding his time. I am afraid of retaliation. The media keeps reporting he is not striking back because he may not be able to, but I wonder if he is just sitting back and waiting. Art Rowland, town councillor and World War II veteran feels the same. I hope it will be over in eight days, but it might be wishful thinking. If it drags on it becomes demoralizing. Time will have to tell. I don't agree with war but I feel it had to be done, said Rowland. We don't know if Saddam Hussein has atomic weapons, and if we don't do this now. we may not be able to do it later. Town mayor. Bob Armstrong agrees. I wish the world could have a better way of doing things, but the world doesn't need people like Saddam. I also wish we could have made sanctions work, but I am not in a position to say whether they would have or not. I just share most people feelings in saying I hope it ends quickly.
