'Ma' Brainard was born in Hendersonville, North Carolina and moved to Bozeman, Montana. Sha and husband, Leroy Brainard came to the Hanna area in 1909 and settled on the east side of Sinclair Lake in the Peace River district in 1913. This later became Brainard, and 'Ma' was post mistress there.
