Tractor-train load of wood near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
Wood, used as mine timbers, to fire boilers, and for domestic heating by families living in mining camps, was cut and hauled from the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The train consisted of six or seven bob-sleighs, with a tar-papered caboose at the end. Extremely cold weather caused hazards and pressure ridges in the ice which impeded progress across the lake.
