Shorty' came to the west in 1885 from Goderich, Ontario. Working on construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Calgary. In 1886 he operated a stopping-house on the Calgary-Fort Macleod trail at Pine Creek, Alberta. Later he operated the Buck Smith stopping house and purchased his own ranch one mile west of High River. McLaughlin was also interested in raising race horses, and travelled the race circuit in Canada and United States. Same as NB-9-59.
