Colonel Wolley-Dod was born in England, where his father was the headmaster at Eton College. In 1882 he moved to Minnesota, later returning to England. From 1887 to 1910 he ranched in the Pine Creek district, then retired to Calgary. During First World War he joined the 82nd Battalion and was drafted into the 31st Battalion in France. On his return he became commander of the 15th Canadian Light Horse [formerly the 15th Alberta Light Horse].
