Wednesday, October 19, 1983 The Gazette Carstairs mayor suffers defeat Carstairs voters came out in droves to elect a new mayor in Mon- day’s general municipal elections, and all in- cumbent councillors seeking re-election were returned to another three-year term in of- fice. Incumbent Dave Cuming was devastated at the polls. Challenger Harvey Bazinet gar- nered 460 votes to Cuming’s 204 to become Carstairs’ new mayor. Incumbents Patt Barr (530 votes), Danny Morrison (520), Jessie Alcorn (484), Elmer Fagyas (352) and Fred Denischuck (339) and newcomer C._ Ross Oberg (484) will form Bazinet’s council for the next three years. Daniel McKay (318), Aso Dudley (231), Gary Herbert (198) and Alfred Thomas (125) failed in their bids for council. Incumbent trustee Donna Maxwell squeezed out challengers Alfred Thomas and Blain Vadnais to return for another term as_ the town’s representative on the Mountain View Board of Education. She took 339 votes to Vadnais’ 268 and Thomas’ 45. Returning officer Daphne Turner repor- ted a 65 per cent voter turnout, the largest in the area. Turner and her assistants counted 668 ballots, a chore which took until well into the wee hours of Tuesday morning to complete. In Didsbury, retur- ning officer Bob Wymess reported a 30- to 35-per-cent turnout . “at the polls, or 748 voters. Incumbents Jim Gole (615 votes), Ron Patten (472), Anne Milne (466) and Bill Ward (454) will be joined on council by newcomers Grant Schultz (446) and Doug Sharpe (418). Losers in that contest were James Brosh (249), Penny Brodie (241), Ron Sweetman (219), Ron Martin (131), Walter Scott (123) and Kalven Insco (88). Mayor Don Watt was acclaimed to office. Two new trustees were elected to the county school board from a slate of three candidates, all seeking their first term. Bruce Simpson (496) and Mildred Lennox (471) will be the town’s new school board represen- tatives. Gordon Quantz (335) failed in his elec- tion bid. In Sundre, Mayor Neil Vanderzwan. registered a decisive victory in his bid for a second term in office, defeating challenger Terrance Leslie 266 votes to 153. Vanderzwan’s council will consist of incum- bents Ross. V. Scott (328), John S. Marek (321), Larry Vockeroth (308), Philip P. Philipoff (333) and newcomers Brian M. Campkin (320) and Betty Louise Rose (296). With 233) ballots cast in his favor, Wayne Davidson was the loser in this contest. Trustee Joe Henze was returned to the county school board by acclamation. Returning officer Muriel Noble reported 421 ballots were cast, two of which were spoiled. Approximately 1,100 Sundre residents were eligible.to vote, .- In. Cremona, coun- cillors Ken Blain, Barry Mjolsness and Carmen to village council by ac- clamation, as was the municipality’s represen- tative on Mountain View's school board, Anne Rose. In Bowden, returning officer Dianne Sorenson ‘reported 229 of the town’s 600 eligible voters cast ballots to return all three incum- bents seeking’ re- election to council. In- cumbents Wilfred Boese (187), Gayla Hanna (172) and Janet Myers (170) will be joined by’ newcomers John Williams (161), Mildred Land (131) and Elsie Nelson (201) on town council. Robert Kemp (128) lost out in this race. Incumbent Elwood Fyton was returned to another term on the Innisfail Hospital Board, defeating challenger Doreen Greig 123 votes to 105. In Crossfield, Albert Curtiss was voted into the mayor's chair, beating Kenneth George Thring 239 votes to 190. Successful incumbents were Alfred Keller (389), F. Wood (354), Keith Adams (312), Peter Thatcher (289), and Murray Hunt. (268). Lorne Kosack (318) beat out Arnold McKernon (171) and Peter Holstein (210) to become the newest member of council.
