Page 8 highway work going well The working days for this huge PCL paving the fine hot weather, the contractor is now stretch. The Gazette Rr PEE, machine are numbered as the base course for the new stretch of Highway 27 west of Olds is now in place. Spurred on by in the process of completing the six mile Stone looking for take John Stone, of the James River area, remembers a time when he and another artist were asked to do a series of paintings. The other artist was known for his paintings of birds and Stone for his wildlife scenes. Stone was to do the wildlife and the other artist was to do birds for a small exhibition. The other artist agreed, but Stone, who was busy at the time raising horses and taking care of his farm, to support his family, declined the offer. I guess I missed the train. Or the plane, because he really took off after that, Stone said. The other artist Ss Randy Fehr. In case you don t know, Fehr, after Robert Bateman, is probably the best known . Canadian wildlife artist. His originals sometimes go for 30,000. But at the time Stone, who has some of his works on display at the Mountain View Museum in Olds, was too busy with other things to paint full- time. Now at 53, the artist whose originals go for a respectable 1,100 or so, is in transition. Before, he took care of his horses and his farm full-time while painting in his spare time or in - Arizona during the win- ter. Now, he plans to paint full-time and look after just a few horses as a hobby instead of a livelihood. Stone, who usually does 12 pain- tings a year, plans to bring that total up to 24. At around 1,000 for a John Stone original, it s just barely enough for him and wife Mavis to survive. Of course, there are. the limited editions prints that usually go for 50 to 100 each, but unless you have the backing of a publisher, the cost to make 950 prints is almost. too much to make the project wor thwhile. That s why he needs and is looking for a publisher. According to Stone, there are six major publishers of wildlife art in North America and with the secrets of the trade he learned from who he calls the Big Boys he hopes to be picked up by one so he can concentrate full time on his art instead of the business end of things. : The Big Boys , ac- cording to Stone are Robert Bateman, Ran- dy Fehr and John Housekeeping Supervisor required by the Olds General Hospital The Olds General Hospital re- quires a person trained and experienced in health care housekeeping techniques to head this department in our new 100-bed facility. These. ar- . tists have influenced his work and have also praised it. John Seery-Lester even went as far as to call Stone s paintings fantastic he said. T value good art and a good painting, so that s why I try and do my best for each one , Stone said. His best means cap turing the character of the subject because without it, you really don t have a painting, he says. You must get acquainted with the subject and to Stone that. means riding out in the country near his home searching for sub- jects and their habitat. It also means reading up, studying photos and other paintings to understand everything off about the subject. Everyone should know about what they paint , he said. Of course living in the area for most of his life, has helped the artist with art. Also, his work with horses, sometimes they had 72 Arabians in theit stable, and other ariimals, has given him a firsthand knowledge of their structure muscular movements and ac- tions. Details are important to him and: he says some artists who do wildlife and western scenes don t pay enough attention to the minor details. These include the stit- ching of the harness of a plow being pulled by two horses. In his pain- ting With Hand to the Plow, one of his most popular, you can barely see the stitching of the harness. But Stone con- tends it is there and if you use a ifyi glass you see it is true. It s the attention to detail and the love he has for painting and his subjects that will probably make him one of those Big Boys in the next few years. He loves his art and everytime he sees an original he says there is a sense of loss, like the leaving of a child or a removal of a part of his body. To completely show this, we must look at his first oil painting he did when he was twelve. It shows a scene of trees near a marsh or a small pond and it was done on a piece of cardboard. It was completed in 1946 and the cardboard is cracked and hard due to age and wear. After 41 years, he still has it. 4x4 Sierra Classic 305 VB, auto, air conditioning, loaded with extras 11,500 1986 Mercury Topaz Sedan 4 cy). auto, low mileage . . 7,850 1981 Acadian 1000 2 door, 4cyl.,4 sp., radio ........... 2,550 1980 Mercury Zephyr Station Wagon VB, auto, radio .... 6... eee eee eee 2,650 1986 Chevette Sedan 4 cyl., auto, radio, low mileage....... 5,500 1985 GMC Ton Wrangler 350 V8, auto, tilt steering, cruise control ...........+0-+: 10, 500 1982 GMC Ton 6.2 L Diesel, auto, radio, High Sierra tilt steering .... 2.6.6... eee eee ee 7 arf 50 H R Pontiac Box 3009 Olds, Alberta TOM 1P0 Phone 556-6404 Buick Ltd. barrel person. son. register, contact Cal Blaney OLDS VOLUNTEER KS; FIRE DEPARTMENT ANNUAL BUCKET MOUNTAIN VIEW AMBULANCE EMERGENCY: OLDS: 556-4141 DIDSBURY: 335-3577 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES OLDS AUTO UPHOLSTERY (1987) 556-6111 Wednesday, July 29, 1987 Business Professional Directory Tabler Refrigeration Air Conditioning Sales Service ALL TYPES REFRIGERATION ALL TYPES OF AIR CONDITIONING Moblile 1-554-5296 Res. 556-7752 * Quality Manufacturers * Custom Cabinetry * Traditional European Styling * Post Formed Flat Lay Counter Tops Visit Our Showroom Next Door to Realty World Amigo Open Weekdays 10:00 to 5:00 No. 4 - 4530 - 49 Ave., Olds - Cabinets EnCounters * Personal Design and Service Kitthey cat att mm LY CALL 856-3321 Jim Martin Wood.
