Spring FELT HATS CARD OF THANKS I wish to take this opportunity and: Commerce that the exisiting floor prices for western oats and barley will be maintained for the 1949-50 crop year, will be of great interest: The floor prices for oats and barley produced in Western Canada are: 61% cents a bushel for No. 1 feed oats and. 90 cents a bushel for No. 1 feed barley, both in store at Fort William and Port Athur. These. are support prices only, and producers will have the advantage of whatever higher prices prevail during 1949-50. 5 ‘Price support for oil seed crops— flax seed, rape seed. and sunflower seed, is withdrawn, because.of sur- pluses in these seeds and oils. (Montcalm barley, our only smooth awned malting barley has already become very. popular; because of its| smooth awns and its excellent yield- ing -ability. Sale of this barley may be: hampered, especially for export because it is not acceptable in the United States as a malting barley. ‘The: present high price of wool ought to be one inducement for farmers to keep more sheep. A few sheep around a farm are a great help in keeping the farm yards free of weeds and long grass. In 1948, Canada produced 11.915,000 pounds of woool and used 102,167,00 pounds. We shouldn’t need to fear a- surplus. If we could control the coyote menace many more flocks of sheep would be kept. I have had enquiries why cows some times have depraved appe- tites and eat old bones. etc. Milk cows. should always be fed mineral supplements. Calcium particularly. is often deficient because the cows put large quantities of that in the milk they give, and if it is not supplied in their feed they rob parts of their body to supply. it. Ground limestone will. supply it, but does not supply another element, phos- phorous, necessary to the proper utilization of the calcium, Bone meal supvlies both. Lack of calcium is one’ of the chief causes of “Milk Fever”. In the March issue of “The Country Guide” is an article entitl- ed, “Jim Brown's Story”. P. M. Abel, associate editor, tells of work done in Manitoba. by Prof... J, M. Brown. Tt deals in a verv interesting manner } with the problem mentioned above. | and also with deficiencies that oc-/| cur in certain parts of Manitoba. T fecomnmend that.you read this art- cle. Jn regard to the phosphorous de- |! ficient areas. some years. ago Pro. Fllis, tells of tracing a serious sit- uation in certain areas of Manitoba deficient in nhosphorous. Manv more cases of arthritis developed there. ‘When gardens received ap- plications of phosphorous fertilizer the condition improved. Read Mr. Abel’s article. : to thank all those- who sent cards and letters and came to See me| while I was in the Innisfail hospital. J mR H.-A.
