Ow- ing to wet summer and fall condi- tions the growth of Canada thistle, sow thistle and other weeds is un- usually vigorous this year. Success in your 1966 weed control pro- gram will depend in no small mea- sure on the effectiveness of spray- ing or cultivation operations this fall, both on summertfallow and crop land. : Mhistle Control — The best way to control thistles is by cultivation or a combination of cultivation and ‘spraying. Wet weather tlfis fall has prevented efficient culti- vation of summerfalow fields. Con- tly, it is r ded that summerfallow land and crop fields infested with thistles be sprayed, the tender which will be returned after the contract is awarded. —~ The attention of tenderers is drawn to the “Public Works Act”, page 2, clause 9, which refers to Forfeiture of Security. Where tillage is neces- sary for the control of thistles and other weeds it should be done with a wide blade cultivator that will ‘leave the stubble standing to catch snow and conserve moisture. Dont waste the time and effort you spent on your summerfallow this summer by failing to control weed growth this fall. Fall spray- ing of fallow and stubble fields is considered by weed specialists to be an effective, practical and econ- omic means of controling trouble- some perennial and annual weeds.
