This aircraft is fully equipped for cloud seeding and carries 104 flares. These flares are drop- ped from an altitude of 16-20,- 000 feet, depending upon the temperature inside the cloud, pinto the tops of growing storm clouds. Each flare, in a card- board container, burns comp- letely as it falls, releasing 50 grams of silver iodide smoke, the tiny particles which act as freezing nuclei. This cloud _ IN SAN FRANCISCO, Your Friendship Inn is The CORONET MOTEL A warm welcome awaits you Alberta H weekly report clouds as possible before they ing areas. This is an experi- move eastward across the farm- gram to determine the feasabi- mental hail suppression pro- lity as well as the effectiveness of suppressing hail over a spec- ified area. Only three operational hours were flown by the Cessna last week as the extremely wet and cool weather does not lead to significant hail production. However, the widespread show- er activity that broke out last Wednesday with sorme storm tops to 25-30,000 feet did pro- duce pea and. some grape -sized hail. Eleven storm clouds were il Studies used to determine the location of silver fallout from the storm arid will be correlated with the seeding locations and radar structures of the storms to as- sist in evaluating the seeding effectiveness. One evaluation technique is to determine the silver iodide path through the storm to see if the silver iod- ide was in the right pdsition within the storm to be able to affect the hail growth process. Detailed scientific analysis a- long these lines of some of last. year’s seeded storms is be- ing presented by Dr. Summers and Dr. Chisholm this week at the U.S. Third National Con- ference on Weather Modifica- MAYCITY city W..
