The junior boys, coached by Gerald Rempel. recently won the C Pool of the Bert Church Tournament in Airdrie. The Sr. Boys, coached by Dwayne Brown, won eight out of 10 games at the County League Tournament in Didsbury on October 14. All interested are welcome lo attend and can make reservations by calling the school at 556-4038. Donna Zimmerman Adriel Larson letters to the editor Following are a group of letters written by Marion Spence's Grade 3 OES class, after a visit to the Waste Transfer Station: The Waste Transfer Station is for cardboard boxes, old newspaper, old tires, anything that people don't want. The WTS has a machine that uses boxes, little tiny bits of paper and no plastic things. The Waste transfer station workers are probably used to the smell in there. They have three or four piles of stuff that people can use. The WTS is good for reusing the old stuff. The waste transfer station is in Olds, there's a lot of garbage 21, 1992 that should not go to the landfill. Stacie Bishop We should recycle and reduce the amount of garbage we throw away and save the earth. Use the enviro wagons and do more recycling of grass, newspaper, cardboard, pop cans and save lives. by Sheldon Wahlstrom Everybody listen up There are ways to recycle garbage. For example you can turn tin cans into a set of drums. At the Olds College they use newspaper for bedding for the dairy cows. There is a big problem in Olds and its called littering We've all got to help Olds get better and greener Things that can be recycled should be recycled instead of sending it away to a landfill at Rocky Mountain House. Tires can be made into playgrounds for children. We don't want Olds to be a smelling place covered in garbage. We want Olds to be clean and shiny, don't we? by Gloria Lipski On September 24 we took a short trip to the Waste Transfer Station. It's sad to see aU of the garbage. But what can we do about it? 1. Sort your garbage. 2. Reuse cans, jars, plastic bags, etc. 3. Sort your paper and more And you can make your environment a better place - and remember the three important words recycle, reuse, replant - because earth matters.- by Nicole Robinson Everybody listen up There is a big problem in Olds and people should do something about it. The problem is LITTERING Just about every person is cutting down trees and littering. If we plant new trees and take some of the garbage that cannot be reused to the Waste Transfer Station. Things like plastic bags, and boxes, and jars, and tin cans, and old bottles you can reuse all over again or you can recycle paper. and juice boxes. You could make a compost and bury the things that are in your compost in the ground. If you want a cleaner world you could start by picking up garbage and composting and not littering. Then Olds can be a better place, by Shanna Lenfesty The waste transfer station was fun. I liked how you crushed the cardboard. I learned a lot of things. I also liked all the stuff in the metal pile. You had a lot of cardboard on* the floor. Is it hard to haul that much of cardboard to Rocky Mountain House in a month? I learned you make 30 trips a month. What do you do with the tires? from Tyler Maclntyre October 7, 1992. Waste Transfer Station. At the waste transfer station they send cardboard to Calgary to make shingles. They put the cardboard in a card baler. Then they close a door then they push a button and the cardboard went down. They send thirty loads of garbage a month to Rocky Mountain House. They will store the garbage that is out side and the garbage is one hill of tree branch and wood and one hill of metal and one hill of tires. They have -a big hole in the waste transfer station and they put the garbage in it. They pack it and then haul it to Rocky Mountain House to a landfill sight. by Alexis Kingsley Derrick is a man at the waste transfer station. The WTS reduces a lot of things. They have bikes and a lot of stuff that can be recycled and you should recycle too. The world will be better so do not litter and recycle because it is a lot of work to recycle at the rate we are going. So get a bin and recycle . . . paper, cardboard, and mixed paper. There is a lot we need to do about the garbage in our world so help us. So go to the WTS and learn you can recycle . . . wood, tin, grass, leaves and a lot more. So save a lot go just out of town and have fun. Like we did but don't wear good clothes. They use shreds of paper for bedding. Like for cows. I hope you do or the town of Olds is going to be mad at you for not recycling. And you can recycle news paper too. Like this one. If you don't just give me a call and I will do it for you because it is close. Your friend, Meaghan Connolly Grizzlys GM's report by Bob Clark This last week has been a tough week for theGrizzlys and the coaching staff. They returned from Lloyd- minister after letting two games slip away in the last five minutes of each game. However, Saturday night they took their frustrations out on Pt. McMurray, beating the Oil Barons 13-1. Lloydminster comes to Olds on Friday, October 23 - 8-00 p.m. The Grizzlys have a score to settle with the Blazers - should be an interesting night. Included in the night's entertainment will be the indoor fireworks and light display provided by Sports Innovations - a big night at the Complex. Last week saw five changes in the Grizzlys The Gazette line-up. These types of player personnel decisions are always difficult but must be made with at least two considerations in mind: - What is best for the player involved - one easy decision is to keep players longer than needed to complete evaluations. This hurts the players if they are released later - leaving them fewer options in continuing their hockey pi y* - What is needed at a specific time - given the teams' strengths and needs, also keeping in mind the ages of players and what players may be returning from other teams or what players may be available. These issues naturally impact on decisions and were factors in the following changes this last week. The following player moves were made last week: Travis Munday - defenceman - rookie, is going to play in the Rocky Mtn. League in Northern B.C. - further details should be available next week. Colum Cavilla - 2nd year goalie - has been made available for trade - even though Colum played back-up last year we didn't feel he could be the starter this season. Sheldon Martenson - defenceman - rookie who played several games with the Grizzlys last year. Sheldon has a great attitude, but didn't fit into the top six defencemen. His future plans are expected to be finalized in the next few days - we assured him that if he wanted to play with another team in the AJHL we would make that possible. Jeromey Heistad defenceman - home Innisfail, 17 yeara old, returned to the Grizzlys from Medicine Hat Tigers of the major junior league. He played well in his first game last Saturday. Mike Cotrone - goalie rookie - home Long Island, N.Y. via PorO land Winter Hawks - Mike played soundly Saturday night against Page 13 the Oil Barons. Curtis Sheptak has finished a league suspension and will be available to play Tuesday in Sherwood Park.
