ALBERTA AGRICULTURE Karen Hoover Distr'Ct Home Economist transition team to coordinate go-vanmentr-wide streamlining and departmental consolidation was announced Dec. 22 by Premier Ralph Klein. The team, a function of the Government Reorganization Secretariat, signals a departure from traditional governmental management structures - government members wdl be sitting en the same committee as public servants. It also will provide direction on dealing with human resource issues arising from reducing Cabinet to 17 positions from 26. We want to find ways to deliver services to Albertans as efficiently and sensibly as possible - my goal is to give .Alber tans the good government they deserve at a cost they can afford, said Premier Klein It is intended that the is managed in a planned and orderly manner. Before making recommendations to Cabinet, the transition team will review submissions from each government department on how to structure ser vices and administration under the new Cabinet 'Ihe team also will look at the scope of downsizing projected from the changes and make sure that employees are treated in a fair and reasonable way during the transitionf Human resource support programs will be made available to those public servants affected by change. Such programs- may include alternate employment opportunities in government and voluntary job sharing options. Wherever possible, nor- mal employee attrition will be the first approach to any staff reductions. We wffl be looking for input and involvement from our employees, members at the public groups and associations, said Deputy Premier Peter Elzinga, Minister Responsible for the Government Reorganization Secretariat .As a start, the Premier and I are hoping to meet as soon as possible with Pat Wocknitz, President of the aMberta Union of Provincial Employees. Members of the transition team include: Peter Elzinga, Minister Responsible for the Government Reorganization Secretariat, Chair; Ken Rolstad, MLA Camrose; Vance Mac- Nichol Deputy Minister, Executive Council; Jim Dixon, Public Service Commissioner; Harvey Alton, Deputy Minister, Transportation and Utilities; Jack Davis. Deputy Minister, Municipal Affairs; Ed McLellan, Deputy Minister, Public Works, Supply and Services; a-U O'Brien, Deputy Provincial Treasurer; Marine Penan, Deputy Minister, Seniors; Linda Singleton, Managing Director, Public lt;- ffair-s Bureau. The New Rainbow Guide to Healthy Eating It's new ... it's improved ... it's Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating How fitting for a brand new guide to be released on the 50th anniversary of the very first one (called Canada's Food Rules) in 1942. .Just released by Health and Welfare Canada, this state-of- the-art eating guide is designed to help Canadians, four years of age and older, look, feel and perform at their best. It will help people make wise food choices to help ensure good health now and in the future. It reflects the large amount of information linking diet to such diseases as heart disease and some cancers learned since 1982. when the food guide was last updated. So, how is the new food guide different from the one we've had for the last 10 years? First of all, it has a new look. It is in the shape of a rainbow, with each of the four coloured bands in the rainbow representing one food group. Just as all the different coloured bands of a rainbow are needed to make a complete rainbow, all four bands (food groups) in the food guide rainbow are needed for a healthy and complete diet. As well, just 'as the coloured bands of a rainbow are different in size, so too, are those in the new Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. This shows that the amounts needled for the four food groups are different. For example, a healthy diet means eating larger amounts of certain foods such as breads, cereals, vegetables and fruits compared to other foods such as meat and milk products. The food groups have new names Although there are still four basic food groups, the names have changed. They're now called the Grain Products, Vegetables and Fruit, Milk Products, and Meat and Alternatives. Which foods go in which food groups remains pretty much the same as before. It has more specific information. Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating has several helpful statements which give more information, on how to choose a healthier diet. Most of these are eating guidelines (eg. Enjoy a variety of foods from each group every day and Choo.*e lower-fat foods more often ) but there is also a recommendation to enjoy the vitality from being physically active. It looks at tie total diet Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating recognizes that the key to nutritional hea: h is nnt any one food, meal or even a day's meals, but the overall pattern of eating over the long term. So, there are no good foods or bad foods, only good and poor diets .All 'foods, even high fat ones like vegetable oil, butter Boss: Jake, why aren't you working? Jake: Gee, I didn 't see you coming and potato chips can be part of a healthy diet as long as moderation is kept in mind Canada's Food Guide has gone through some major changes over its 50 year history, and it could be said that it's come a long way, baby . Get on the right track to good eating. Get your copy of the new Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating from me at 556-4220. Many thanks to Karen Goad, DHE in Innisfail, for this informative article. ' ' Ectiban-25 now available for black fly control Ectiban-25 insecticide haa been registered for use with cattle self- applicators. This replaces the temporary registration * on Ectiban-25 for restricted use in severely affected black fly areas. This is welcome news for producers in the black fly affected area, as they have been waiting for more than five years, says Ali Khan, an Alberta Agriculture en tomologist. Ectiban is a non-systemic insecticide well known for quick knock down of black flies and mosquitoes. It's also registered for use on house flies, stable flies and lice. Khan aaya the insecticide can be used for beef cattle in pasture and on the range in back-rub self- treatment oilers, such aa post-doom Lewis or buzz-off oilers. This can be fot either free choice or forced use treatment. Oiler treatment isn't for use with lac- tating dairy cattle, he adds.
