Page 4 The Gazette SINCE YOU WERE FIRED WITH DUE CAUSE Y VOURE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR U.I.C.... * NEXT WINDOW PLEASE I - ********* as Wedneeday, December 1 19W entral . lt; Central -Alberta Crime Stoppers to thank you fop your continued support of the program and to wish you a pleasant Christmaa season; and best wishes for the New Year. letter to the editor I want to share this picture of my son and his palomino gelding named Goldenrod. This is a very special picture to our family as it shows Cody with his favorite friend. It is also a picture that will never be taken again, thanks to some thoughtless idiot who probably calls himself a hunter. Recently we discovered that Cody's horse had been shot and killed. During hunting season, our area is swamped with people out hunting. The majority of the people are honest, sensible sportsmen who are considerate of farmers' property and whom ask permission to hunt on our land. But then there are the thoughtless idiots Who do things like this. This horse was in a pasture with other horses, with many residences nearby. No one had asked for permissifon to hunt there, a true hunter would recognize that due to the houses and livestock nearby it was not a safe place to discharge a firearm. There is also evidence that the horse suffered a lot before he died. Hunters identify animals before shooting, and they attempt to make a clean kill causing as little suffering as possible. The person or people responsible for this cannot be called hunters, and these idiots are the reason that many farmers are forced to post their land. My son's friend is gone forever . . horses of this quality are almost impossible to replace . and what about a five year old boy's broken heart? If anyone has any in formation regarding this thoughtless incident that occurred west of the Bergen Store on or around December '4th, please contact the Didsbury RCMP or our family. Thank you, Sandra Smith Sundre, Alberta letter to the editor Dear Ms. Harper The Central Alberta Crime Stoppers program has been a success since its inception in 1984. The program is community sponsored and community operated. Its success is directly a result of the efforts and co-operation between the public, the police, and the community spirited media such as yourselves. In 1993 the program in Central aMberta has resulted in the arrest of over 55 criminal suspects in unsolved crime, in the recovery of over 8150,000 in drugs and stolen property, and in arrests related to 90,000 in arson cases. I wish to take this opportunity on behalf of Cst aAlasdair Maddnnon Central Alberta Crime Stopper Program Police Coordinator gas plant worker ordered to stand trial A worker at the Shell plant in Caroline has been ordered to Stand trial for the beating of a co-worker in the parking lot at the plant. Joseph Francis Raats has been ordered to stand trial on one count of assault causing bodily harm after the judge determined during a preliminary hearing that there was' enough evidence to proceed with the case. The charges stem from the beating of an iron worker at the plant last June. The prosecution presented four witnesses at the hearing while the. defence declined to introduce any evidence. 5 7 0 Jft1101 0 0 0 special perks must go When John Turner assumed the mantle of Prime Minister of Canada, he was heavily criticized for leaving in place the many political plums handed out of Pierre Trudeau. Monday, Albertans anointed a new Premier. Among the plums that the new premier has apparently sanctioned is the one granted the outgoing premier, Don Getty. That is a newly renovated downtown Edmonton office. The cost to Alberta taxpayers is estimated at 10,000 for renovations and an annual rent of 17,000. While we applaud Mr. Klein's move to reduce the size of his cabinet and to reduce the number of committees, Albertans will not sanction special privileges for outgoing MLA's, cabinet ministers and premiers. If you share this view, pick up the phone and call Mr. Klein's office at 427-2251. behind the headlines MULRONEY DEFENDS DRUG MEASURES The prime minister was replying to criticism of a bill that will increase to 20 years the time in which brand-name drugs are protected from cheaper copies. The opposition in the Commons has mounted a vigorous campaign against the bill which will increase drug prices from 10 to 100 . The bill will increase drug costs in every province including Quebec where, the prime minister contends, hundreds of research jobs will be created* The legislation is retroactive in 1991 and that will prevent the generic drug companies from marketing products they have spent millions of dollars to develop. The government says the new legislation will mean more research jobs. The critics say prescription drugs in Canada will cost billions of dollars more in return for non-binding promises from foreign-owned firms that dominate the drug industry. We'll place our money on the outcome predicted by the critics. MONARCHY NOW UNDER SCRUTINY Could a marriage made in heaven survive the intense scrutiny of Britain's tabloids? Thafs the question being asked in Britain following the break-up of the troubled marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales. This private tragedy brings into focus the question of whether the Canadian monarchy will survive as a viable institution. Britons may be faithful to King and Country but we, in Canada, are less susceptible to that tradition. Queen Elizabeth was a binding force in a world of rapid change as she presided over the winds which swept across the British Empire changing many countries to independent states. Now that a Royal separation has been officially recognized, the whole purpose of the Crown, especially in Canada, needs to be defined. ELECTION WOULD BE SUICIDE FOR TORIES. The latest opinion poll shows Canadians why the prime minister has ignored the Commons since the failure of those Constitutional proposals. According to the latest poll the Tories trail the Liberals by 25 points; 3/4 of Canadians say the Tories are leading the country the wrong way; 69 say that one of the other parties could do a better job; 36 My they would never vote Tory again. It seems that voters are leaving the federal Tory fold in flocks and many have now found a home in the Reform Party or the Bloc Quebecais. The Angus Reid group say that three factors can .'put the Tories back into contention. These1 f8fe- '': tors are economic recovery, a change in Conservative leadership and the Liberals continuing under Jean Chretien. Chretien trails his party's popularity by 12 points and that hardly points to a Liberal win in the next federal election. Mulroney has already said that he'll lead the Tories into the next election. That leaves the economy. Based on the U.S. experience, the next Canadian election will be fought on three fronts - the economy, the health care system and education. HOME INSURANCE SURPRISES The sewer backs up in your home. Ifs more than a pail and mop job. You think you are covered by insurance. Well, it isn't necessarily so says Bill McLeod a business professor at Cambridge College at Sudbury, Ontario. McLeod says that there are three basic plans - a broad form - a mid priced plan and a comprehensive all risk plan. He says that insurers should review their policies with their agent and to ascertain what coverages are included in the policy. McLeod also says that a visual (VCR) or written record of house contents should be made. Above all make sure you advise your agent when you make major new purchases so that your coverage can be reviewed. In today's society, homeowners should give some consideration to such things as basement window bars and motion lights. The message is clear - don't be surprised by something that isn't covered by your policy.
