Page 4 After nine years in the insurance business Pauline Hoare (left) officially handed over the keys to Marlec Insurance Agencies this week to new owner Bev Penny (middle) and co-worker Lori Gans (right) at their recent grand opening August 15th. her word against his by Anthony Connolly A woman's testimony that her ex-husband slapped her in the face during an argument was not enough to convince a provincial court judge that the man did it. The husband's testimony was that his ex-wife was lying. Both the Crown and defence counsels could not prove their respective cases in this trial that ran last week in provincial court. Grown counsel, Willard Willms. tried unsuccessfully to prove that on July 4. 1989. Jerry Peter Lamboo struck Janice Lamboo across the face. Willard said that the argument on that day was about the custody of the bamboo's four- year-old daughter. Mr. Lamboo was asking for more access to his daughter at that time of the year and the couple were going through custody court to argue the matter. Willard said history dictated that the Lam- boos constantly fought over the custody rights of their daughter Aaron. Mr. Lamboo's lawyer. David Younggren of Calgary, fought for his client's reputation by implying that' Mrs. Lamboo, the former, was lying about the slap to the face. Younggren blatantly called Janice Lamboo a liar. 1 put to you Mrs. Lamboo that my client did not slap you - you made it up. Younggren said. No. a quiet Janice Lamboo replied in the witness box. Younggren says that his client did go to Janice Lamboo's home on July 4, did bring pictures with him to show his daughter, Aaron, did have an argument with Janice Lamboo, but then left the house after Janice Lamboo phoned the police. Jerry Lamboo did not The Gazette slap Janice Lamboo. he said, it is a creation of her mind. Younggren accused Janice Lamboo of lying about the slap to look good in a custody battle. Janice Lamboo stood by her story that her ex-husband came by her home, July 4, unannounced with a folder of pictures to show their daughter. She said in testimony that her ex-husband began to talk about mediation and the custody of Aaron while at her home. She asked him to leave three times, he got angry and slapped her with the folder of pictures on her right cheek. Younggren brought Tisha Lamboo, Jerry's wife, to the stand to back up his evidence that Janice was a liar. Tisha Lamboo testified that Janice could not be trusted and would probably lie under oath. She was not seen in the community as a truthful person, Tisha Lamboo said in the witness box. TOM IPO Phone 556-6404 where her opinion came from on Janice, Tisha said from Jerry, her own dealings with her and from family members of Jerry's. When asked how she could comment on the community's perception of Janice Lamboo, Tisha said she had heard about Janice from Roberta Hammer. Roberta Hammer, a friend of Tisha's, is the sister of one of Janice Lamboo's former boyfriends it was heard in court. Judge D. L. Crowe called Tisha Lamboo's testimony petty and said it had little weight in this case. In acquitting Jerry Lamboo, Judge D. L. Crowe said that on the basis of both Janice and Jerry's testimonies, he could not say one was more truthful than the other. There is no reason to believe one over the other, he said. Jerry Peter Lamboo was found not guilty of assault. new wheat disease discovered in county crops by Shelley Bandura Farmers may best be aware of the new forms of wheat fungus recently discovered in Alberta. First spotted in crops north of Edmonton, recent findings from District Agriculturist Ron Woolf now indicate the problem has spread closer to home. The areas I have seen affected by this are primarily within a 12 mile radius of Olds. . but I haven't looked elsewhere yet. I'm sure it's all over. The diseases, Woolf says, fall either under the Take-All or Eyespot variety. They basically attack the stem and girdle a straw which prevents the nutrients from going up the shaft. This leads to premature ripening of the head and doesn't leave many kernels there. Taking into account a random selection of ten fields scattered throughout our district, anywhere from eight to 80 percent showed traces of Eyespot. Take-All ranged from none to 46 percent of the stems chosen. . it was just a random sampling though. The news doesn't get any better. Apparently, there is nothing a farmer can do to help the situation once the disease has already struck. A lot of research on this has been done. Unfortunately, with Eyespot, it also attacks barley. It's not as serious as the cases with wheat though, saiiHPlant Wednesday, August 23, 1989 Pathologist Steve Slopek who carried out the random testing procedure with Woolf. But according to Slopek, the disease is still very new, and effective deterrents to the problem won't come overnight. It was first discovered for the first time in 1986. Eyespot was first found to cause a problem in winter cereal crops. There is some work being done in Europe, but nothing's available here yet. Estimating the possible damage such fungi are capable of producing is difficult at this time, but Woolf says to expect decreases anywhere from 10 to 15 percent in your yields.
