Wednesday, September 20, 1989 The Gazette four dead after RCMP chase police report by Anthony Connolly Four people are dead following an RCMP high-speed chase along Highway 2 near Car- stairs early Sunday morning. Airdrie RCMP Freeway Patrol say that a fleeing offender's car drove head-on into another vehicle as it was being pursured by Didsbury RCMP. One female passenger survived the collision and is in serious condition in Calgary General Hospital. Dead is Didsbury teenager Kelly Simm, join forces Alberta Forestry, Laands and Wildlife has joined forces with the Crimestoppers program to combat arson related fires in the province's forested areas. The joint initiative was announced September 11 by Honourable LeRoy Fjordbotten, Minister of Forestry, Lands and WQdlife and George Nikel, Chairman of Edmonton Crime- stoppers. The program, which will operate through the 41 Crimestopper communities in northern Alberta, is an attempt to apprehend anyone who deliberately sets a fire. Mr. Fjordbotten stated, On average, for the past ten years, there have been about 60 forest fires set each year, and because of the growing number of communities and subdivisions on the edge of the forest, these fires are becoming a hazard. Also, the timber resources in northern Alberta have now increased in value. The number of forest fires in 1988 was 837 with 191 of these caused by lightening, and 648 were man caused. Of these, 50 were deliberately set. Mr. George Nikel, chairman of Edmonton Crimestoppers, said, We became involved due to the serious nature of this type of crime. It is a criminal offense and as such, falls under our Crime- stopper program, and we are more than willing to assist Alberta Forestry, Lands and Wildlife. Since most of these fires fall in the rural areas, our joint program will be operated out of the 41 communities involved in Northern Alberta which covers the area from Red Deer north. Crimestoppers is a non-profit, volunteer organization which offers a cash reward, anonymously, to people who call in tips which lead to the arrest of an individual who may have been involved in a crime. 17. The names of the dead in the other car are not being released pending notification of relatives. They are reportedly from British Columbia. Cst. P. Droppo, of RCMP Airdrie, reading from a prepared statement said Didsbury RCMP had attempted to stop the vehicle a number of times as it sped throughout the Town of Didsbury and County of Mountain View. The driver of the car was known to Didsbury RCMP. He was being stopped because of a Highway Traffic Act violation, the Airdrie constable said. Cst. Droppo could not deny nor confirm that the Didsbury RCMP were trying to stop the vehicle because it had gone through a stop sign. At one point, Cst. Droppo said, Didsbury RCMP lost sight of the vehicle and had to resume their pursuit at a later time. After a number of attempts to get the car to stop, a spiked belt was placed at a Carstairs intersection, he said. The offender drove over the belt causing the right front tire to deflate and finally fall off. Driving on three wheels and a rim the offender continued to drive away from the RCMP. The offender drove down Highway 581 east of Carstairs and headed toward the overpass intersection of 581 and Highway 2. The car turned abrup-. tly south onto the northbound traffic flow exit ramp and onto Highway 2. The southbound car was driving down the highway the wrong way. The vehicle travelled northbound down the inside lane of the highway, the constable said. Half a kilometer south of Carstairs the offender's car slammed head- on into a northbound car. Airdrie RCMP Freeway Patrol are handling the case because the accident occurred on Highway 2, Cst. Droppo said. He said that the offender was driving his car at speeds exceeding 150 kilometers. During the high-speed chase traffic was reported to be light to nonexistent. RCMP did not get close to the offending car, Cst. Droppo said. It was reported on CFCN's evening news that the RCMP car, in pursuit, was about 100 meters away from the accident when it occurred. September 12-18 Close to 50 complaints were reported to the Olds RCMP last week. Of the 47, 30 originated from town while 17 came from the outlying areas. Olds tallied 17 of the 23 reported criminal complaints. The remaining six came from the rural area. Only one impaired driving charge was issued this week, but seven highway traffic act charges were laid. Three of these came from town with the remaining four from the country. Three of the five liquor control act charges were laid in town. The remaining, once again, originated from the outlying area. Only three motor vehicle administration act charges were laid by officers this week All of them occurred in town. drug farm busted near Sundre by Shelley Bandura Over 100,000 worth of marijuana and hydroponic equipment are being seized by RCMP officials from a drug farm east of Sundre. After surveying the situation for a month, members of the Red Deer RCMP Drug Section closed in on the operation Wednesday to arrest 31-year-old Andrew Joseph Cote. Corporal Craig Loney from the Red Deer Detachment says they could not close in sooner because of requirements outlined in their warranting procedure. We didn't feel we had the grounds to close in sooner because we have to wait to obtain everything we needed for a warrant. Constable Dan Wilson from the Sundre detachment reported Cote has since been charged with cultivation of a narcotic and possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking. So far, officials at Red Deer's RCMP, believe the farm to be a one- man operation. It's still under in vestigation, but so far, we know it to be run by only one man, said Cpl. Loney. Cpl. Loney explained drug farms like Cote's are probably more common than most people think. There's probably numerous incidents going on that nobody knows about, that's why they reside in these isolated sorts of places. They often just go there in the spring to plant and in the fall to harvest. Chances are they wouldn't even live there year round. Cote is scheduled to appear at Sundre's Provincial Court October 10. While there are no injury accidents to report this week, five accidents under 500 did occur. Three took place in town and two in the country. September 12 at 0928 hours: People's Church, Olds. Didsbury court by Shelley Bandura Linda Neergaard says she wants to get a lawyer before she'll issue plea to charges of possession of stolen property. Neergaard appeared in Didsbury's Provincial Court last Tuesday over charges laid this summer in connection to numerous theft incidents involving her son, Christopher Neergaard. According to a statement released by the Crown Prosecutor two weeks ago, Linda Neergaard played a major role in storing, and later re-selling 6,300 worth of stolen cigarettes in Calgary. Her son, Christopher Neergaard was handed down a 21 month sentence two weeks ago for his part in stealing the goods. Neergaard is scheduled to give plea on the charges September 26 in Didsbury. * * * A preliminary hearing will have to be held first before the courts can decide whether there's enough evidence against Douglas Weber to stand trial. Weber was charged May 26 for several counts of knowingly forging documents to Borden Feeders Association beginning in April 1988. October 24 has been set for the preliminary hearing. Weber has asked to be tried by a judge and jury. * * Letting someone ride outside his vehicle snagged Wes Hindes 100 in court last Tuesday. While the fine for knowingly permitting someone to ride outside your vehicle was only 50, Judge A. P. Demong added .on another 50 after hearing Hinde's reasoning for not appearing on the charge issued July 1, 1989. I just forgot about it, he told the court. Hindes was granted seven days to pay for the fine. Later, Judge Demong told him, You have neglected to appear in court and have demonstrated that you have no respect for the system.
