Page 4 head of the class New Olds Junior Senior High School Teachers: llrl Pat Jeffery, Angele LaLonde and Lennard Fink. KS i New Olds Elementary School Teachers: (l-r) Deidre McConnell and Nancy Coupland. The Gazette By Anthony Connolly Some fresh from university, others back from maternity leave, the 27 new teachers and staff for the County of Mountain View schools sat through a class of their own this week. The 21st annual Teacher Orientation program held at the County office in Didsbury. August 30, was a chance for the incoming teachers to find out more about the school system they are entering before taking their respective positions at the head of the class. Dr. Barclay Cant, school superintendent, addressed the troops in a lecture theatre he jokingly referred to as the disaster room in the basement of the County office. Running through a printed Fact Book Cant was able to address a wide range of topics for the new teachers to consider. Most important, he said, was for teachers to become familiar with the various policies in place that will affect them and their job. Cant welcomed each and every teacher by having the teachers themselves introduce the person to their right. County of Mountain View Board of Education chairman, Mary Jane Harper was on hand to represent the board and to acquaint the new teachers with the duty of school trustees. She told the group that the board was in place to help the students, but also there to guide teachers. If teachers ever need ed help the Mountain View Board of Education was there to help, she said. Assistant superintendent, Shirley Van Eaton, addressed a similar concern by speaking about the county's Buddy Teacher program. She said the program was produced to help first-time teachers with any problems they have during the year. A first-year teacher is coupled with an experienced teacher. Van Eaton said. The buddy teacher is usually from another school in the county, she said. The new teachers in the Olds' schools looking for their buddies this fall are: Nancy Coupland. of Didsbury, will be going into her fourth year as a teacher when she begins to teach the Olds Elementary grade one class this fall. Deidre McConnell. of Edmonton, will be teaching grade one this year in this her first year as a teacher. Lennard Fink, of Ponoka, after 6 and a half years of teaching, (some of it in Japan), will be teaching grade seven language arts and social sciences. While at the Olds Junior Senior High School he hopes to coach volleyball. Pat Jeffery, a self- proclaimed teaching veteran from Olds, will enter her fifth year as a teacher with her home economics class this fall. Angele Lalonde, of Calgary, will be teaching French this year at the Olds Junior Senior High School. This is her third year as a teacher. Full county-wide teacher placements in the next Mountain View County News. Killer Drug More than 1.600 persons died in the United States in 1967 after using cocaine, says National Geographic. Louise Feltham MP Wildrose FREE TRADE AND THE TRAVELLER Many Albertans contemplating a trip to the United States may wonder if the recent Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) has altered any of the duty regulations that they have become accustomed to. On some goods, duty will be eliminated immediately and on others, gradually by January 1, 1998. If you wish to determine the rate of duty for any specific item, please contact your nearest Canada Customs office. Goods will be eligible for lower FTA duty rates if they are of U.S. and/or Canadian origin and are for personal use. They must have been acquired in the U.S. and must not be marked or labelled to indicate that they were produced in any other country other than the U.S. or Canada. Goods of other than U.S. and or Canadian origin will not be eligible for the lower FTA duty rates. The FTA does not change personal exemptions or quantitative restrictions on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages. After 24 hours' absence or more any number of times per year you may bring in goods to the value of 20.00 (except tobacco and alcoholic beverages). After 48 hours' absence any number of times a year you may bring in goods to the value of 100.00. After seven days' absence or more once every calendar year you may bring in goods to the value of 300.00. For additional information or assistance please contact your nearest Customs office before leaving Canada. In Alberta call (1-800- 472-9719).
