Wednesday, November 18,1992 Gazette Sports 3 Grizzlys' coach Stewart confident -mi weekend in two games that went down to the wire. The first game, in Olds Friday night, was fast and hard hitting with the Grizzlys eking out a 2-1 victory late in the third. by Dan-ell Sfinehr-i-aa Grizzlys coach Chris Stewart says he's confident his team will repeat as AJHL champions for the second straight year. Stewart, speaking to a Gold Card Sponsors' luncheon on Friday, said the Grizzlys are on track and right where he expected them to be at this point of the season. We're in first place. Our power plan is on a record setting pace and we're averaging seven goals a game. Our goals against are a little high but it's only mental mistakes, he said. Stewart said he is happy with the day of bis young goaltending tandem of 18-year-old Ian Perkins and 17- year-old Mike Cotrone. Ian Perkins is only 18 and has started out the season as our starting goalie this year. That's quite a feat in itself. He's six foot three and (NHL) cential scouting has Been taking a look at him. Cotrone is from New York and came to us from the WHL after being released by the Portland Winterhawks. As a 17-year-old he really shows good promise. The Grizzlys' coach said he's also pleased with the play of his four forward lilies so far this season. He says the scoring lines of Lajeunesse, Erdman and Graham * and Fulton, Murphy and MacPhee have been doing an excellent job. We're scoring seven a game and the power plan is on a record .setting pace. Mike (MacPhee) has done an excellent job in filling in for Geoff liska who haa a bad knee and will at least be out until Christmas, he said. Ib addition to his team's scoring power, Stewart told the gold card sponsors he believes they have the best cheeking line in the AJHL with Zimmel, Sheptak and newcomer Brad Koop- mans. We have an outstanding checking line, much as we did last year with Rambo, Dallas and Price, he said. He said he is also pleased with the play of his fourth line which he stresses plays regularly except when special teams take their spot. They go out there and sort of settle things down or calm the water. These are the real heart players who we can put on to give guys like Lajeunesse a rest, he said. The one area Stewart said the team could use some help in on defence. The defence is quite young and we plan on aging it a bit by getting a little more experience, he said. We need guys who know what to do in tough situations. The aging of the defence began this Sunday with the return of Gary Lebsack from Moose Jaw of the WHL. Stewart says Lebsack chose to return Grizzlys split with Royals by Darrell Stnnehnuae The Olds Grizzlys split a home and home series with the Calgary Royals over the ma iii a-.,. *:.M m T h: t-ilrl* arc *. .ki f *-aUl t-a ,, a:,M WlSaaal : Ca;riJ--ir,** ,*-aia aar ., , a Olds Diplomats Olds opened up the searing with 6:05 left in the first period when Tyler Graham scored on the wrap-around after Reo Lajeunesse stole the puck deep in the Royals' zone and was stymied by goalie Chris Davis. Congratulations to all the team members, you played so well. submitted by Diplomats The Olds Diplomats, after starting strong have fallen to 4-6-1 in tlwir league. With a 40 record at.the start of the season, they have played with little or no enthusiasm for the last six games with losses to Carstairs, Cochrane, Lacombe and Ponoka. The Diplomats have flatly blown two games with leads (both game to Carstairs) with 2:00 minutes remaining. Penalties are the main problem with some players venting their own frustration on the ice. The coaching staff have had enough of one man teams and changes may be looming. According to Waiting injuries to key players may be a part of it with two defencemen out with leg injuries and one out with a separated shoulder. They let up for 15 minutes a game - in junior hockey 15 minutes costs a lot of goals. The slump has to end fast. The players however are still optimistic, With 10 games played there's lots of hockey left says vet Kelly Bartholow. Ya, we're getting down on each other but we're confident we can turn this around. By play-off time we will be the team to beat. The coaching staff are really showing us some great systems. We just have to execute them better as a team. With the next home game on Sunday against the Innisfail Blades the Diplomats should be ready; to play. Come out and support Junior B hockey and see the local boys play. See you at the rink.
