The local Lions Club raised over S400.00 in the fundraising venture Shelby Chrest in America's Cup by Derrick Penner Olds duffer Shelby Chrest and the Alberta Junior men's golf team put up a good fight at the America's Cup junior tournament last week in Portland. Oregon,' but finished I4lh in a strong field of competitors. Chrest said the tournament was still a good last. Chrest noted that among the American teams scores in the 60s were common. A player from a California team hit a course record 65 during the tournament. Playing on Oregon's top rated golf course was some compensation for the team, going into national cham- warm up for the Alfern-. pionships play. It was a good experience Chrest said. We will probably get into that kind of competition at the nationals. The Alberta team did la team, headirig mto the junior national championships over the weekend in Sydney. Nova Scotia. As a team we were hoping Lo place in the lop ten. but the competition was- quite strong. A lot of those kids play 12 months a year whereas we're lucky if we play tour months. Chrest said. At least we weren't turn in some respectable scores. Sherwood Park's Mike Belbin lead the team with a three day total of 233. Calgary's Jamie Welder shot 234. Chrest said he didn't feel too badly about how he played, he hit a 78 in his first round, a team low 73 in the second round, and a weather hampered 86 in his third. While competition was stiff, the trip also gave the Alberta golfers a chance to see the type of game needed to get to the top of thespdH. They didn't hit the ball much different than we do; their strength is in their chipping and work around the green. We're not quite as good as they are in that aspect.' Overall. Chrest said the trip was a valuable experience. Olds Auction Mart report Report for the week ending Tuesday. August 4. 1992. Cattle 152. hogs 321. BUTCHER CATTLE: Al-2 steers 76.00 to 81.00. According to the Associate Dean of Extension Services. Susan Bannerman, this tailor-made process in an important self- esteem builder. I think anytime you sit down with an individual and show them, through listening, that you are genuinely interested in their goals and aspirations, you are building up that person's feeling of self-worth. That is one of the first steps to developing confidence - a very saleable employment quality. Another benefit of the program is that each student determines t he tasks they wish to dedicate the most ef fort to mastering. Some of these might include: resume preparation, job search techniques, study and learning skills, and academic upgrading (grades 0-12). Participants are encouraged to set specific vocational choices so that we may coordinate on-the-job training with area employers, says Bannerman. We can't promise them jobs, but we can give them an excellent chance to prove themselves in the workforce. The Occupational Choices program is being funded by the Canada Employment Centre. Applications for the program are being accepted until August 31, 1992.
