Page-10 the stetson and the turban The Gazette Sergeant - North-West Mounted Police 1874 To exclude the hat the officer pays disrespect to the uniform. The Sikh uniform, if you can call it that, was first handed down by the 10th Guru, or spiritual leader, in 1699. In the 1800's the red coat of the North West Mounted Police began to appear on Canadian soil. The color red was chosen so that aboriginal peoples would recognize and associate the police force with the British army or rule, Beahan said in a telephone interview from Ottawa. Blue was ruled out because of the hard times the American troopers had inflicted upon the Native people. Blue was the color of the American army, Beahan said. The head gear of the, now, RCMP force has seen many versions before coming to the world-reknown stetson. In the 1880's police officers wore a white Sergeant - Royal Canadian Mounted Police 1979 by Anthony Connolly All over the world they are known for what they place upon their heads. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are known for their brown stetson and red serge uniform. Sikhs are identified by the turban and the dagger. Now Canadians, across the nation, are debating about the future of both. Sikhs want to wear their turbans. Some Canadians feel this would i alter the tradition of the uniform. The RCMP haven't released an official statement regarding the allowance of turban- wearing officers in their ranks. But the Sikhs of Canada have most definitely made their case. A Sikh without a turban isn't a Sikh. An RCMP officer that is a Sikh must be allowed to wear a turban. The history of the RCMP uniform is one which tells of an outfit in constant flux over the years. It changes constantly, Dr. William Beahan, RCMP historian in Ottawa says. The turban, and the five Ks of a Sikh have been around since 1699. It hasn't changed since then, Hardev Singh, president of the Sikh Society of Calgary, said. The turban, kagha (wooden comb), kara (steel bracelet), kacha the toad in the strawberry patch by Nell Leatherdale What youngster living in the centre of a northern Ontario countryside filled with trees and animals would want to go picking strawberries? It was my lot to be chosen every summer to accompany my mother to the strawberry patch that was at the far end of the farm. There warm summer rains combined with sunny days to produce a succulent harvest. I don't think I hated the outing because the berries were so plentiful that we filled the milk m bucket and the Rogers Syrup pails in very short order. My mother seemed always able to find the largest, juiciest berries and pick as fast as I could, I just didn't match her results. Then like a chapter out of Grimm's Fairy Tales, there came a solution. A large toad appeared in the area where Mother was picking. She gathered up her pails and skirts and moved to another location. I captured that toad and put him in a cup and into my shirt pocket. Then I picked and picked in pith helmet with a spike sticking up from the top of the helmet. The red coat and blue pants with yellow stripe had already become a traditional part of the uniform by then, the RCMP historian said. Throughout the years the head gear went through a number of looks including a deer stalker style, a pill box hat with chin strap, forage cap without and with peak and then came the statson. The stetson's father is the cowboy hat. Troops of patrolling RCMP officers dressed ruggedly for travels across the Canadian landscape. They wore a prairie hat or cowboy hat and began to wear the original version of the uniform officers wear day in and day out today. The red coat was replaced with a heavier stable coat, the shirt was khaki and the pants remained blue with a yellow stripe. The uniform, especially the stetson, became so popular with the men that the force adopted the look to present day. In 1897 at the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign the red coat, known as a serge, and wide- rimmed stetson made its audacious premiere. In 1902 this uniform became official. The uniform stayed pretty much the same for years until women were officially granted Wednesday, December 20, 1989 into the police force. Beahan said the uniform was modified slightly at this time. The stetson was seen as too feminine so women were given a forage cap with a different shape, he said. Legion news The Legion Christmas party, held on December 9, was very successful, with an excellent turnout of enthusiastic members. Don't forget to get your tickets for the New Year's Eve party. It promises to be an enjoyable evening. The missing flags are still missing. Please return them Simply drop them off inside the front door no questions will be asked and the police report will be withdrawn. Here's your chance to do a Christmas good deed Atom A Our team travelled to Didsbury Tuesday, December 12 for a league game. Our first goal was a nice shot in the top left corner by Jesse Herman. Then a pass from Reid Lansing landed on Ike Hanna's stick, who rifled it upstairs. In the second period the Olds scoreboard lit up once. Jesse was responsible - his second of the game. Goal no. 4 came in the third period by Brent McDonald, a successful wrap-around move. Didsbury scored once early in the game making the final score 4-1. Russell MacKenzie made many good saves in net. Good effort was given by all our skaters. (special underwear), kesh (long hair), and kirpan (dagger) are the insignia required by all Sikhs. To exclude any one of the items, especially the turban, is to denounce yourself as a Sikh, Singh said. The brown stetson, the blue pants with yellow stripe, the riding boots and black gloves are the insignia required by RCMP while in ceremony. The forage cap with band of yellow, khaki shirt, blue pants with yellow stripe, the black shoes and belt with holster is the uniform of our rural Canadian police force. When you take a picture of an RCMP officer out-of-doors they are required to wear their hat that choice berry patch. Mother found another. Out came the cup and the toad to magically appear to move Mother aside. Again with the toad safely stowed away I enjoyed the prospect of beating Mother at the picking game. From that moment until we left the farm and moved to the bright lights of the big town I was the top strawberry picker. All I needed to do was find a big slow moving toad and Mother's Scottish superstitions did the rest. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town 1 YOU better watch out, you better not cry Better not pout.
