Page 16 The Gazette Wednesday, December 13, 1989 As seasonal as a Christmas tree, lights on a house or eggnog the Olds RCMP began to beef up its check stop in -order to keep drinking to passengers only. With this time of the year comes the usual parties and the usual drinking and with it comes those that will attempt to get behind the wheel of their care. The Olds detachment RCMP will be conducting Checkstops throughout the holidays. You can be expected to be stopped by police conducting checks for drinking drivers. The police want you and your friends to enjoy themselves but most importantly we want you and others who share the road to be safe and free from persons who drink and drive. safety committee sought By Anthony Connolly Councillor Jim Spicer wants to strike up a committee to make Olds a safer place. A Health and Safety Committee would be responsible for public awareness of accident prevention, he said. Spicer first heard of the committee idea while attending an Alberta Urban Municipalities Association convention in Edmonton held recently. So impressed with a program in Red Deer, Spicer wants the Town of Olds to start one itself. Preventative health is healthy, he said. By making citizens aware of accident prevention, accidents may not happen. Members of the committee would include a councillor, an RCMP officer, two members from the local petroleum agencies, a representative from the Olds Hospital Board and local Board of Education. Presently Councillor Spicer is trying to track down literature on the subject. Neil Garvin, safety and emergency measures coordinator for Red Deer, says their city's program is working very well. It took Red Deer a 60,000 Heritage Grant to establish the program. But more funds are needed, to continue such a venture, Garvin said. Soliciting corporate contributions is the way to go, he said. The Red Deer City Safety Committee took several distinct stages to be completed. A steering committee was appointed, program committees were drawn up and brain-storming sessions laid the ground work for the programs nine key areas of concern. Child, School and Home, key health and safety and security programs, was their first area of concern. Sports and Leisure, Transportation and Traffic, Farm and Agriculture, programs for the visually and physically handicapped, senior citizens, neighbourhood programs, fire prevention and a program for worker and business followed. All areas of concern were broken down into manageable sections for further study and resolve. The Red Deer program was never at a loss for input or ready- made projects. For each of those areas there are programs out there. Clubs and organizations have such programs ready for distribution or instruction. The Alberta Safety Council, Occupation Health and Safety, fire departments and the Red Cross have oodles of programs. And programs of preventative awareness are a citizen's right, Garvin says. It's a citizen's right to live in a good environment, the Red Deer safety administrator said. Garvin says the need is great for programs to spread awareness of accident prevention throughout the community. Spicer agrees. If you stop one kid from having an ac cident, two kids will stop and think, he said. Garvin says he will come to Olds to speak on the formation of such asked. a program if fa-tflfU IfS l g l OTI glS S Iff s rff-gggra-immm-im v.
