Wednesday, December 6, 1989 The Gazette *IC3MBMG by Cynthia Drill-ill It was an easy trip up for RNA Carol Robb trying out the new patient lift at Olds Hospital recently. The lift, estimated at 2,500.00, was supplied by Trudell Medical. important to Red Deer and Calgary as a bedroom town because of our location. Growing numbers of people are living here and working elsewhere and we should build our town to attract this stable clientelle. Part of the attraction of Olds is the lower housing costs and the rural pace, so in keeping with that, do we need to be that contemporary, does Council have to spend so much money attracting tourists at the expense of property owners? Think of it - first the Tourist Information Center property , then the signage and corporate image, the new logo - what next? Do you care? If you do, speak up one way or the other. Just look at your tax bill and weigh the returns on it. choices presented for landfill site by Shelley Bandura There are six possible landfifll sites to choose from in the County of Mountain View. A few years ago our family had the opportunity to spend the Christmas season in the Montego Bay area of Jamaica, B.W.I. Jamaica is a tourist based economy attempting to diversify into light, clean industry and trying to regain some of its agricultural importance. The country learned the hard way that tourists can be fickle, not particularly loyal and do not necessarily spend the dollars the local merchants expect. On November 27, 1989, our town council bought a tourist oriented package that Will cost us 44,000.00 plus and will consist of welcome signs at each of the four major points of entry into town, some maps, and some direction signs to points of interest within town. That's just about it, oh, by the way, they bought a new logo too. This so we can have a consistent corporate image that is contemporary and in the process makes obsolete our two year-old flag. The powers that be are quick to point out we will pay only half of this since there are grants from Edmonton. Who the heck pays Edmonton anyway? I believe we need some signs but what puzzles me is that it appears we bought the only package brought to us. I do not doubt the Tourist Action Committee's work (and they are doing a good and enthusiastic job) but 1 question the process that gives tis the whott package first time around. To boot, it's from an out of town company I don't expect Olds will ever have a tourist based economy since our geography isn't quite right but I do expect Olds to be a pit stop for most tourists. Olds will definitely be That's what Golder and Associates were able to arrive at in presenting their draft study of the situation to the Mountain View Regional Landfill Search Committee last week. Mount View Health Unit Representative Brian Gregory says all six suggested landfill sites are located east of Highway 2A near Olds. They said because of constraints in other areas, they zeroed in on this district . Sundre was ruled out because the water table is really too high there. About two months ago, the Landfill Search Committee hired Golder to undertake the task of finding a landfill site suitable to accept waste from both the Sundre and Olds transfer stations. Originally. Gregory says the consultants started with 13 choices, but then narrowed it down to six. They went through a number of parameters and they had a number of constraints so they put them together like overlays and explained them all to us in their presentation. Factors such as superficial geology, topography (drainage course), hydrogeology (ground water movement), soil type, drift (thickness above the bedrock), well depth and volumes were all considered. They also took transportation and population into consideration they didn't want to put it in an area that's too populated. Over the next few weeks, committee members will contemplate their options and decide whether any or all are worth pursuing. Some of us may have a number of other considerations we'd like to see them investigate. Some people, for exam- Mertins Mrs. Else Mertins of Olds, Alberta, passed away in the Didsbury Auxiliary Hospital on Sunday. December 3, 1989 at the age of 89 years. The next meeting for the Mountain View Regional Landfill Search Committee is December 18. They are going to be deciding on what option they are going to go with, said Gregory. after that, our next step is to basically negotiate with the owners of the best site.
