Page 12 One person was injured in a single vehicle roll-over south of Olds Sept 7. The vehicle was travelling north on Highway 2 when it crossed the median and rolled onto the southbound lanes. Witnesses say the vehicle was travelling under the speed limit before the incident end RCMP ere still investigating. The driver, 75-year-old Harold Swain and passenger Edwin Klawitter are both from Edmonton. flying high again by Keith MacLean On a given day, weather permitting, a Soviet MIG jet can be seen flying overhead. Meanwhile, on the ground, mechanics do some last-minute fine- tuning on various planes ranging from a Stearman second world war biplane to a Chip munk. All these planes, along with numerous others, belong to the 18 members of the Didsbury, Olds and Carstairs (DOC) Flyers who come out to the two-and-a- half acre airport to fly their aircraft. The only thing, however, these pilots never leave the ground. DOC Flyers is a radio- controlled model airplane club whose members fly their planes on a corner piece of land of a farmer's field, located a few miles north of Didsbury. The airport consists of three runways, a kid's playground, a parking lot and an area for planes and pilots. Grant Hemming, president and founder of the dub, decided to form the dub in March of 1989 in an attempt to bring together hobby-flyers from across the county. The Gazette organization to get together and help each other, says Hemming. It's a young dub, we're still learning. The dub offers instruction to amateur flyers who wish to join the membership but flyers must first be a member of Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) before using the airfield. DOC fees are 26 per annum and MAAC fees are 40 per annum. Instructors that are capable of instructing are at a premium, ao we've been slow getting started, says Hemming. The club stresses safety and has even developed a constitution to govern flying procedures at the airfield Because there are so many people and so much equipment we really lean on eafety aspects, says Hemming. Theee are powerful things - two and four cycle engines. He also added that the planes reach speeds of 80 to 100 mph. Hemming says there are a lot of planes sitting on basement shelves or in garages because the people lack the instruction to fly the planes. He hopes to attract these once-interested flyers. There's a lot of equipment and a lot of knowledge involved, it's just a matter of people acquiring it. New members are required to take instruction on trainer planes before advancing on to bigger and fester planes, says Hemming, which takes usually 15, 10-minute flights.
