Wednesday, September 26, 1990 The Gazette This little one sat down to enjoy a plastic steak at the opening of the new Kids Matter Children's Centre. Owner Karen McDonald wanted to open a daycare that was bright and appealing to both children and parents. Kids Matter is now taking registrations for its daycare program. Children and adults enjoy the feast laid out at the grand opening of the Kids Matter Children's Centre in Olds last Friday evening. Owner Karen McDonald said she opened the new daycare because she saw a need for another centre in town. daycare opens teaching award. An original offer of 66,500 was amended to 67,200 by the town of Didsbury on lots located in Southridge and was mutually accepted by developer James Dyce. Dyce said he will release more information about his developmental plans once transaction documents from the town are finalized. According to Storey, last December Dyce put an offer on two lots up for sale by the town and an option on 26 more. He exercised By Keith MacLean A proposed skydiving school at the Olds-Didsbury Airport has been grounded by the Airport Commission before even getting a chance to takeoff. The commission received a letter earlier this year from two private individuals who were interested in starting a sky-diving school at the airport. But, according to Bob Laidlaw, one of the interested partners, then- proposal came to a discouraging end, after local pilots refused to co-operate. Local pilots are nervous, said Laidlaw. At first the reception was good by the airport commission, but on second thought it got grounded. Gerry Bakken, chairman of the airport commission, said nothing official was submitted by Laidlaw and his partner Lyle Waddel on their proposal. We said to the people 'you send us a proposal on what you want to do,' said Bakken. But, we haven't heard back from them.'' However, Laidlaw said after sending the original letter and after Waddel attended one of the commission's meeting, the response was negative. We sent the letter in April and the response in May wasn't positive, said Laidlaw. Lyle attended the meeting and it didn't go well. It wasn't working out so we abandoned the program. Bakken stated that aside from the safety concerns a sky-diving school would present the wrong image of the airport. We're trying to promote the airport as a commercial facility, not as a recreation facility - not a play thing. For Laidlaw this sort of response is common for him and his partner. They don't understand how a sky-diving school operates, we get plagued with problems - all the negative incidents, Currently in the area a first-jump sky-diving course is offered in Beiseker, but accor ding to Laidlaw it doesn't have the depth of training they were proposing for their school. The Olds - Didsbury Airport would have served as a good central location for the school said Laidlaw, but they will now look at other potential airports in the area. It would be nice if there was a change of heart (by the commission) to look at it again, said Laidlaw. But we've been fully discouraged.
