Equipment from the present location will be placed in the new facility during the where there's smoking, there could be lire If someone were to drop a burning cigarette between the cushions of a sofa during a party, how long do you think it would take before that sofa burst into flames? Fifteen minutes? Thirty minutes? An hour? In reality, a smouldering cigarette, hiding in upholstered furniture, can easily ignite nearby material which then burns quietly away for as many as five hours Wednesday, September 18, 1991 the lives of 11 peopled. Another 51 people were injured and more than three and a half million dollars in property was destroyed. The moat sobering thought to accompany those statistics, is that all of those fires could have been prevented. If you smoke, live with a smoker, or invite smokers into your home you must be alert to the hazards of smoking, and take proper fire safety precautions: have plenty of ashtrays conveniently placed in all rooms. (Large deep ashtrays are the safest because there is less risk of a cigarette foiling out and starting a fire); Don't allow anyone to smoke in bed or while lying down; Soak cigarette butts before disposing of them or flush them down the toilet (even when they appear to be extinguished, there is still a chance a cigarette butt may be smouldering. If you dump them into a wastebasket containing paper or other combustibles, fire could breakout); Be particularly vigilant around smokers who are intoxicated or taking medication which makes them drowsy, and those who are elderly or have impaired motor ability; Before you leave a room where people have been smoking, carefully check between and under furniture cushions; Keep matches and lighters away from children. Wright believes that customers will be as pleased with the new facility aa he ia. Overall the inside shopping space is 40 per cent larger than what we had and there will be parking for 160 cars, with eight handicapped parking stalls. The new store will feature a delicatessen, expanded meat service and self-serve cafeteria. The grand opening of the Co-op's new facility is planned for late in October. Wright hopes that the president of Federated Co-op Limited will be attending the official ribbon cutting ceremony. before making itself known. By the time fire breaks out everyone in your household may already be asleep and unaware of the burning Last year in Alberta 176 destructive fires were started by careless smoking. Most of those (over 80 per cent), were started in upholstered furniture, bedding or mattresses and other household com bustibles, in a scenario similar to the one described above Smoking related fires are the largest single cause of home fire deaths in this province. In 1990, careless smoking fire claimed editor's note: On past occasions and again this week, the Gazette has received excellent letters to the editor, however we have not been able to publish those letters which have not been signed by the writer.
