+ Their reports indicate that the nec- Supplement ‘to THE ous GAZETTE, March 2nd, 1917 Farm Labor for > Spring Work The question. of the supply of farm labor for spring seeding has engaged the attention of all serious minded persons who have been int- —erested in the coming season’s crop production in Western Canada. For several weeks the Provincial Department of Agriculture has. had agents working in varioug pa of _the United States with a- w__to} seeuring farm labor. The Publicity Commissioner, Mr. Hotchkiss, and his assistant, Mr. Daly,- have both been travelling through the States endeavoring to secure information as to the possible supply and where the men may be found. Recently, . four other agents have been sent by the Provincial Department, and have been instructed ‘to work in eonjunction:. with the Federal: Im- migration officers in certain ~ states. These men are giving first hand in- formation regarding: the necessities “of the province for farm help. ersary supply of labor will be found. The majority of the help. for . Al- berta. will come from the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, . the Dakotas: and California. There will also be afew men come through from St. Paul and Kansas City. Mr. RB. B. Bennett; Director of National Service, visited the prov- ince a few days ago for the purpore of rendering whatever : assistance would be possible in the supplying of farm labor The Provincial Gov- ernment arranged with Mr. Bennett: to have a representative attend a meéting to be held in ‘Winnipeg _wivere the question of western farm oo. ‘be discussed. This eo os held on March 8th. United Btates equal to’ the number appointed by the province. This men will be working for the Prov- ince of Alberta. ; : The Dominion Department of the Interior agree to allow any: person working as a farm laborer in Can- ada during the present year to count as homestead duty,the périod during’whiech he is employed at farm work. The Federal Govern- |;, ment will algo issue through its Immigration Offices in the United States to each man who wisaes the ‘game, & Certificate, siating that he| — will be exempt from the. perform- ance of military duty while in Can- ada and will be allowed to return to the United States at any time. The railway companies have a- greed to give a rate of 1c a mile from boundary points to any - part of the province on certificate of the customs officer that the bearer is a farm laborer. Provisions have also been made thrt tickets may’ be is- sued at le per mile from Duluth, St. Paul and Spokane to the bound- ary. . The different railway comp- anies issuing these tickets will beb- it the Dominion Government with the balance of eacw ticket, and, in turn, the . Dominion Government will debit the Provincial Govern- ment with 50% of the amount. The Provincial Department has arranged for offices to be opened at Edmonton,Calgary. dnd Lethbridge. Agents of the Department will be: located at these points and will. be pleased to receive applications from farmers or from associations of farmers, requiring farm help. .On certificate from these agents the railway companies have agreed to give a rate of 1c a mile from distri- buting points to. the place where men go to work.
