Several trips, for various reasons, have taken me to Ottawa. In April, | took part in a Toronto Seminar on utility financing and rate regulation design. In September, | have agreed to speak at Spokane to the North-west Electric Light and Power Association. Most of my Ministerial travel and speeches are in Alberta. | have spoken at several rural gas co-ops meetings — the most re- cent at High Prairie. Our Progressive Conservative annual convention was last month in Calgary. | speaker to the Canadian Cable Television Associa- tlon in Calgary, the Can- adian Gas Association in Jasper, the Canadian Telecommunication Assoc -lation in Edmonton. and most recently, the “Can- adian Association of Members of Public Utility Tribunals in Edmonton. Ip addition there are numer- ous Invitations to Alberta association meetings around the province. | miss the opportunity to attend Alberta Fish and Game Assocation conven- tlons and those of the Western Stock Growers Association -- these were highlights when | was Minister of Lands and Forests. | have many new The Gazette Some bf my most enjoy- able trips are in the Three Hills constituency. My most recent opportunities were the Agriculture So- clety '‘MLA Roast’ at Torrington, Women’s In- stitute Regional Confer- ence at Langdon, and the Fish and Game meeting at Huxley. Each year, | look forward to the summer sports days. On alternate years, | have attended Canada Day celebrations In| Acme and Trochu. Similarly, | have alter- nately attended Heritage Day events in Belseker and Three Hills. Constituents sometimes ask what is Involved being MLA in Alberta and Min- ister of Utilities and Tele- phones. | thought the foregoing sample of acti- peat moss could be dangerous for chick litter Several lots of farm chicks received at Alberta Agriculture’s veterinary services laboratory in Edmonton in the last week or so have been found to be suffering from a di- sease caused by fungal spores in peat moss. According to the head of the laboratory’s poultry section, Dr. John Howell, the disease is caused by the fungus Aspergillus Fumigatus which grows in the lungs and air sacks of young birds, causing them ed, it was found that peat moss was being used as litter for the chicks, all of which were less than a week old. He also says that the peat moss appear- ed to be the kind sold for gardens, and that the fungus was isolated from the samples of the peat moss that were tested. It would appear that the baby chicks in these cases had been inhaling fungal spores, .which grew in their lungs and caused pneumonia (aspergillo- sis). Losses from the fungus can be very heavy, and there is no treatment that Is effective against this type of pneumonia. If the’ disease is suspected, the only thing that can be done is to remove the peat moss, and replace it with Wednesday, May 10, 1978 ready have the disease, but it will prevent new cases from developing. Dr. Howell says mouldy straw is just as dangerous for baby chicks as peat moss that is infected with fungal spores. He believes that good quality shavings are probably the safest type of litter to use. Central Alta. Angus queen Nineteen year old Peggy Freeman from Stettler is the new Central Alberta Angus Queen.
