Paae 14 The Gazette seed growers meet The Alberta Branch of the C.S.G.A. held their 50th annual meeting in Peace River over January 17th and 18th. Rapeseed and new varieties were the high points of the two day meeting. A panel comprised of: Phil Thomas - Alberta Agriculture Oil Seed Supervisor; Bob Thirsk - Cen Alta Seeds Ltd.; Dr. Zen Kondra - University of Polish variety Candle not yielding as well as the older Torch. Crushers said the market was demanding double zero rapeseed and they were unable to economically crush Tor- ch. In fact, in 1979, they would require eurucic acid and glucosinilate tests on any rape before they allowed delivery. In response to Mr. Vos’ statement that they were of A. Edmonton, predicted a new earlier maturing Argentine rape suitable for Central Alberta and the Peace River should be available in 3 years. It would be a double zero type and would obsolete both Torch and Candle. Dr. D. Faris, ° of Beaverlodge Research Station discussed a new barley he is submitting for licensing this spring. Bradnock, chief of the Seed Section of Plant Products in Ottawa, gave an igsight into breeders riqhts. and its = im- plications growing. He assured growers that breeders rights legislation would not change the existing system of variety licensing. New varieties would — still have to demonstrate advantages over those existing, to receive a license. Seed standards were also discussed. The purity levels of barley and rapeseed are currently under review, but no change will be made this year. Dr. C. R. Elliott gave a very interesting luncheon discussion on his recent trip to China. Kind- ergarten children will also tour the Guild facilities that week. Approval was given to the pottery group to pur- chase a new wheel to accommodate the _ in- creased class size. Alberta Balmer displayed two quilts which utilized li- quid embroidery on larger patches. The basketry class advised that they will be starting to work with willow. Membership fees are now due, covering Janu- ary to August inclusive. The partial term comes as a result of the fiscal year change. It was decided to carry on with the social work- shop on Thursday after- noons. Members can bring their current project and work and visit, too. The newly-elected presi- dent, Edna McUune, pre- sented Alberta Balmer with an engraved spoon:in recognition of her two years as president of the Guild. # Following the meeting, Evelyn Johnson dembdn- strated the making of yarn flowers.
