Page 18 rate of PS item gain te NO!! DENICE JAMIE- SON isn’t waiting for the coffee to ‘‘perk’’, she is ‘watching the weight of a bull flashing on the small digital - type screen to her right. The bull, fortunate- ly, is standing on the scales beside the check- weight office of the Al- berta Hereford Associa- tion Test Centre, Innisfail. The occasion is the reg- ular check of the 206 bulls in the 140 Rate of Gain Test. Photo by A.H. ‘‘Hap”’ Clarke rate of gain test -underway Interest in the current 140 day rate of gain bull test at the Alberta Here- ford Test Association Cen- tre, in Innisfail, is the highest in the eight year history of the event. This year’s 206 yearling bulls, capacity for the present facilities, went through their recent weigh day check with indications of the closest competition since the in- ception of the event. The 140 day rate of gain bull test opens with a 28 ~ g—-up—and—ad-— justing period, then goes straight into the long, rigid ration controlled test. The start is made with pounds of grain grad- ually working into 14 pounds per day of grain and free choice long hay. All breeds are eligible to enter the 140 day rate of gain test, a cattle high- light of the winter that sees entries gain 300 to 350 pounds. Performance throughout the tests each year are watched. with keen interest and are a matter of important re- cord, particularly to young cattlemen looking for top breeding stock or to up grade a herd. Last year, in order, the top three. standings were earned by Pipeline Here- fords, of Taber, with an index. of 120; William Jager, of De Winton and John Yackimec, of Beau- vallin, both scored a sta- tion index of 118 with their entries. The final event for the project is the annual sale in the Pavilion of the ‘Alberta Hereford Centre, which. draws a capacity audience. The sale this ‘year is on Saturday, April ‘45th. The atmosphere of the event is always in the true ‘‘western hospital- ‘ity’’ category. The sale provides an _ opportunity for cattlemen to spend a few hours - visiting, discussing the _.past, present, future, and in over 200 cases means - the purchase of a young senior herd sire prospect. > The sale top price of $17,500 was earned by Ewald Radke, of Medicine Hat, 1974. The runner-up title is held by lan Mac- ‘donald, of Fairview, at $12,500 1972. The contributor, rate of gain and sale price for the top animals, since inception are: A. A used - car buyer may pay more than he bargained for if his new purchase already has a lien. The lien may be the result of a conditional sales contract where the holder of the contract actually owns the car until it is paid. It may be the result of a personal loan where the car was pledged as security. In either case the holder has a_ legal claim on the property until the debt is paid. Even if the bill of sale bears the phrase ‘‘free of all liens and encum- brances’’, the lien is not wiped out if it exists. That phrase is only minimal (RERTUUMEE TRL protection as it merely gives the new owner proof in court that he was deceived by the seller. He may or may not get his money back by going through a time consuming court process. Protect. yourself against ~ such a possibility by in- vestigating the car’s his- tory before you buy it. Contact Alberta Trans- | portation’s Motor Vehicle Branch. For a_ service charge of 50 cents, they can check the car for liens through its serial number For further information on this service, contact your nearest office of Al- berta Consumer and Cor- porate Affairs.
