Wes farms a section of land near Bowden, some 75 miles north of Calgary He has 550 acres un- der cultivation and according to his records it produces almost twice the normal yield for this cular area. a The Agricultural College at Ol recently nsored a Field Day at Wes Houchin’s farm. Wes and Bob | Baptie, Cominco District Si =! visor, drew up a detailed plan of the farm and outlined the tour. Invitations were issued to farmers. | Nearly a hundred interested 5; tators came and heard how Wes — THE OLDS GAZETTE — A Nasty Trick Would the person or persons in the James River District who put sugar in the gas tank of a busy woman’s car, be happy to know that it caused that woman a repair pill of $30.00 plus a full tank of gasoline since a car can’t run on syrup as the mechanic found in the tank, or would their sense of humor be tickled to know that they left her high and dry, in the middle of the night, on an 80 mile trip she had to make so she could be bac! on the ‘threshing outfit next morn- ing. Ten years | ago I was lucky if 1 12,000 bushels a year of the place. Last year I harvested 25,000 bushels of grain from 325 acres and $5, worth of registered Merion Blue grass seed from 30 aces.” He then explained just how this was accomplished. “Fertilizer is the answer. It was only by the use of heavy applications, spring and tall, that I was able to realize such an increase in production.” "Many of Wes’s statistics were eye-opening to the visitors. they would normally use about 100 pounds of 27-140 to the-acre, Wes used 250 pounds. In 1957 he used 24 tons of fertilizers, re- presenting an expend’ Of $2,000 and his increase in production over that of 10 years ago 1s worth an estimated $15,000 a year. There is no doubt in Wes Houchin’s mind —fertilizer doesn’t cost, it pays! Besides being a grain grower of not, Wes also raises Hereford cat- tle as well as hogs. He has about 200 head of the sleekest and fat- test stock that one could find any- where in the West. And he is constantly experimenting with dif- ferent cross breeding of both cat- tle and hogs for better production ‘Wes is a dynamic man, full of new ideas, and eager to put them into practice. All his farm equip- ment is the latest and the best. If an impl ¢ salesman can dem- FOR YOUR Auto Body Repairs | DAVE HENDERSON onstrate that certain machine will earn Wes money, he buys it. One-such interesting piece of equip- ment, which he demonstrated for the crowd is the “farm hand.” It cuts, chops, swaths and loads all his green feed in one quick opera- tion, “fT run this machine at eight miles an hour,” Wes announced as he started the tractor. Chopped clover flew out of the blower, and in a few minutes the truck was loaded. That is the way Wes operates — at top speed. The Houchin farm is operated on a scientific basis. The latest technical information is always available to those who want it. Wa makes use of it regularly. gp VERN’S SALES AND SERVICE First Class Work Guaranteed to your Satisfaction Have that badly needed paint job done NOW Make your Old Car look like NEW with a bright new. When it comes to fertilizers, Wes knows where to get first rate advice. “I'm not selling fertilizer,” he told the visiting farmers, “but if any of you have fertilizer prob- lems, here are the boys with the answers.” With that he introduced three Cominco Sales representatives.
