Served in Force from 1882-1887, regimental number 808. Apprenticed as printer. While serving in Calgary in 1883, Clarke was loaned to Calgary Herald to help print first editions in tent. From 1887 to 1889 Clarke worked for Mcleod Gazette. He owned the Advence, but sold it in 1905 to farm in Rothwell district, Alberta.
